Yes, but it's going to happen sooner or later. Whether he dies today or in a year, it won't make a difference. I think there's a good chance of getting a fairly liberal person in the vatican, but there's just as good of a chance of it being someone ultra-conservative.
I've said this before as you know, but the Pope is in fact pro-science, as pro-science as a Pope will get. He may be an old man but there are younger men with much older ways of thinking that are eager to replace him.

The longer the Pope lingers and others start making decisions in his name the less influence he has in him having a like-minded replacement.
The worse decision he has ever made is his determination to stay in office until the very end instead of being alive and part of the process of selecting a replacement to positively influence his flock

Yeah, really. Why should anyone care about who assumes one of the most influential positions on the planet?
Idiot.

rail Pope suffers heart failure

The Pope has been fed through a nasal tube
Pope John Paul II has suffered a cardiac arrest and is in a grave condition, the Vatican has announced.

The urgent communique came hours after the Pope's health worsened with a high fever caused by an infection.

"Following a urinary tract infection, septic shock and a cardiocirculatory collapse occurred," Vatican spokesman Navarro-Valls said in his statement.

On Thursday he received the Saint Viaticum, the Catholics' last rites for the sick and dying, the spokesman said.

"This morning the condition of the Holy Father is very serious," the statement said, but the 84-year-old pontiff remained "conscious, lucid and tranquil".

The BBC's Tamsin Smith says the mood at the Vatican is very sombre, but the fact that the Pope's spokesman came up with this open announcement - which has not always been the case before - is very significant.

The Pope has decided not to return to Rome's Gemelli hospital - but is being treated in his apartment by his private doctor Renato Buzzetti.

Some observers say this suggests the Pope is too weak to be moved at all.

Sombre mood

On Thursday afternoon, the Pope's temperature soared to 40C (104F), Italian media reported.

He developed breathing troubles and has difficulty in swallowing as a result of the progress of Parkinson's Disease, an incurable condition from which he has been suffering for nearly a decade.

Small groups of faithful gathered at St Peter's Square in Rome on Thursday to pray for the Pope's speedy recovery.

Prelates are openly expressing pessimism about the possibility of the Pope ever resuming the guidance of his one billion-strong church, our correspondent says.

The pontiff is being fed through a nasal tube to aid his recovery from throat surgery last month.

The Pope had appeared briefly at the window of his Vatican apartment on Easter Sunday to bless the faithful, but was not able to speak.

It was the first time during his 26-year pontificate that the Pope delegated the main Easter ceremonies to his cardinals.

Since his throat surgery, he has lost about 19 kg (42 lb), Father Hejmo said, which leaves him more vulnerable to infections.

So far this year the Pope has had two spells in hospital where he received treatment for breathing problems a

He's been sick for so long, I can hardly imagine what it will be like to have a talking, walking pope.

It'll be the new POWERPOPE!

And I don't think they'll put someone more conservative in place. This isn't America, after all. The church isn't blind, they know that some of their conservative opinions cause a lot of suffering in the world. (ie no Condoms)
And suffering is bad PR.
