Absolutely nothing, except convience him that the x86 architecture sucks and he needs to buy a Mac.

I would probally get a mac if I had the money.

I've fixed all the problems I've had, everything is running solid. I just need to customize everything.

Ubuntu owns.

Bochs x86 PC emulator
https://sourceforge.net/projects/bochs
Bochs is a portable x86 PC emulation software package that emulates
enough of the x86 CPU, related AT hardware, and BIOS to run Windows,
Linux, *BSD, Minix, and other OS's, all on your workstation.

Emulating architectures is very slow at the moment, it is extremelly unpractical for casual use.

Mac OSX was built on top of FreeBSD, NOT the unix core. It was built around the FreeBSD KERNEL which IS NOT in the heart of the GUN/linux kernel.

Finally, yes the x86 architecture is one of the weakest ones out there. RISC machines will always outperform them. However, most people (inclusive of this thread) have no fucking clue about what they are and why this is so.

Glad to hear you have everything running. I only have 1 of my personal computers running windows at the moment. Only reason for that is games.

tbh kde and gnome are slow as fuck compared to windows explorer. apart from that linux is nice :icon26:

All of the *nixs are capable of being heavily customized. They're as fast/slow as you make them.

Are you quite sure that it was built on FreeBSD? I always heard it was built on the UNIX kernel causing fewer system crashes. I know Micro$oft went out on a limb and made their own "kernel."

That's excactly what I thought, so yes, I was right that the Mac OS X is based around the UNIX kernel.

Acctually I think gnome is faster then windows explorer for me.

Absolutelly not.

You had the UNIX kernel first. Then Berkley created BSD UNIX. Eventually a team of programmers ported the BSD UNIX kernel to be "free" of the original UNIX code. The result is the FreeBSD kernel.

mac OSX based on FreeBSD:
The most widely-distributed UNIX-based operating system, Mac OS X offers a unique combination of technical elements to the discerning geek, such as the fine-grained multithreading of the Mach 3.0 kernel, tight hardware integration and SMP-safe drivers, as well as zero configuration networking. Panther integrates features from state-of-the-art FreeBSD 5 into Darwin — the Open Source, UNIX-based foundation of Mac OS X — to provide enhanced performance, compatibility and usability.

Pertaining to wether FreeBSD is UNIX or not depends on how you look at it. As per legal claims, it is considered UNIX simply because FreeBSD stemmed from BSD UNIX.

However, the UNIX kernel, FreeBSD kernel, and Linux kernel are all different and maintained by different people. Therefore, they are not the same.

It is common practice however, to group them all together as *nix.

Nice point. Although Apple says it is BSD and UNIX (I just breezed over it.) meaning...what?

It clearly says its based on FreeBSD. Then it defines FreeBSD to be
FreeBSD 5 — the Open Source, UNIX-based foundation of Mac OS X

The Darwin BSD level will run on Intel, which is what MacOS X sits on. Darwin builds exist that run X Windows, though I can't say I ever tried it. Drivers are probably an issue.

I'd still go for a Linux on an Intel system myself unless you're making an online server, of course.

I have Mandrake installed here on my Dull as it lives with XP on the same disk.

Comparing Gnome with Explorer doesn't make sense. Maybe you mean Nautilus?

GNOME is actually, rather slow.

Don't know about gnome, but kde is plenty fast enough for me. And I think inphlict meant the explorer shell not the Windows Explorer program.
