Here's a question -
The whole thing started when the guy overpowered the FEMALE who was escorting him from the detention area to the courtroom. During a press conference, the police chief (or someone in a similar position) was asked by a reporter - "Do you think it was wise to have a single female escorting a 6 foot tall 200 lb violent man?" The guy answered something to this effect "Yes. Females are capable of doing everything that a male can. Besides it has less to do with physical strength and more to do with heart." (not his exact words, but the exact message he gave). Do you agree with him?
I think that is utter bullshit. Hindsight is 20/20, and there are definitely numerous cases where female officers do transfer violent men around, but when you've got a guy who apparently already made a comment that he wasn't going to go down silently, to put a lone female officer in charge of transferring him is ridiculous. But what really annoyed me was the idea that females can "do anything males can do." In physical terms, that simply isn't true. Females are not equal to men in terms of physical strength (in general of course), and a guy with average or slightly above average strength is still going to be stronger than a woman who is generaly considered very strong.
Who knows though, the same thing could have happened to a fat, out of shape male prison gaurd as well....but I think the system is going to come under a lot of scrutiny following this.
