its not </br>
i started to doubt and checked w3s dtd and its <br /> (including space). theres no such thing as </ br>.

<br> is html 4 while <br /> is xhtml. its always cleaner to use <br /> regardless of html version though

gifs dont have translucency, only transparency. since an alpha gradient will go from opaque to transparect using different levels of translucency, the gif will just flatten all translucent 'steps' with the matte color (which is white in this case).

in other words, it wont work. a PNG would do the trick but guess what browser doesnt support PNG translucency...

the only way you are going to get this is by adding the scanlines to the gradient gif and then hope it matches up with the browser background (which it most likely wont since youre using a liquid page).

oh and you might want to use a bigger bgimage. the visual result will be the same but using a tiny bg image to fill up an entire page eats rendering time & memory. ofcourse theres also the case you go too big which will eat memory too make it 20x20 or summat, or even more horizontal to reduce tiling (300x20)

Ah yes, silly me. I think i'll just leave it - not really that noticable anyway.
