What are you talking about. There was no OSX till 2001 there wasnt even ipods and steve jobs wasnt even at apple till 97, who is the driving force behind every change going on that im talking about. Apple hasnt been a OS at war or even capible of battle, but now its a strong OS ( based off unix, google it. ) on strong and cross platform hardware. See thats just it man, you say you want a open OS go get linux, what do you think is under the hood of max OSX ? The articles i read lately show prgrams like linux VMware not only running WinXP in it, but running at essentialy native speeds. It lacks everything Windows has. And with Vista and dual core right on the horizon (circa: Nov 2006) even graphic editors (Photoshop people) have no more reason to use Mac OS.
A Mac is a -village pearson that never saw a computer- friendly.
If you want an actual OS that is powerfull and truely open source, get Linux.

Spotlight from Apple does a decent job of that. Its a GREAT search tool, and sorts things very well...similar to itunes. The MacOS also has awesome "smart folders" that house files based on descriptive criteria, and that dynamically update according to those criteria. As such, you can have a folder that has all your word documents in it that were created in the last month, or movies that contain a specific name in the title or meta data. An OS can do many things, but one thing it can't do is make up for user laziness. Really, just keep things organized in a small system of folders and always save to the right folder and you'll be fine. I've been doing it for years and it's suited me well. There are some benefits, such as being able to follow where things go, etc. so you can better keep track of your work if you're multitasking.
