Quit pretending it's not true. Islam may have been different once, but right now the quote describes it pretty well.

Maybe we do need a big fuckoff clash of cultures to sort out all the bad blood between them.

Edit: Also to weed out fanatics like this lady.

Based on this nonsense with the cartoon and the lack of a real stance being taken by the majority voice about things like putting a hit out on the cartoonist, I'm again beginning to question how 'peaceful' this religion is. Peaceful enough that so many of its followers are protesting and rioting and killing over a cartoon of their prophet? Or have those condemnations of this behavior been coming loud and clear from the mosques, the leaders of the faith, and the masses who will generally follow their every word just aren't listening this time?

Did she go live with goths or something?

I'm open minded and respect peoples beleifs and ways of life, but this is just...wow.

It annoys me sometimes when people think that if you don't beleive in Jesus then you're "Dark sided" or going to hell etc. I beleive in god but I don't beleive in relegion and sometimes people both relegious and non relegious find that hard to accept.

don't get me wrong - i have very deep criticisms against some of the fundamental tenets of islam, but i think this statement:
Islam spreads nothing but ignorance, poverty and hatred
is pretty fundamentalist.

without getting into semantics, and if you capture the idea of the statement, how true would it be if he just changed "nothing but" to "mostly"?

i don't see that though. You're making generalizations from a few thousand violent demonstraters to over a billion individuals.

Its called stereotyping. It helps us dehumanize people and validate out bigotry.

well the idea of the show is to swap housewives into radically different homes for like a fewdays or something. She stayed with a family that gets into alternative shit, like meditation, hypnosis and psychics, and it completely :olo: wiggered her the fuck out.

So what exactly was with the other family, were they really hardcore satan worshipers, or were they just Wiccan or sommat?

IIRC, they were athiests that did card/palm readings and astrology crap. Nothing too serious. I didn't see the episode (never watched the show).

Her faith was so strong that it was completely rattled in a few short days.

I can understand a certian reluctance to take on parm/card readings. But since when was astrology evil?

"A religion is supposed to enhance and enrich a persons life.
Christianity, Judaism, Western culture spreads nothing but ignorance, poverty and hatred."

Does that not sound like something an Islamic extremist may say? IMO, making that kind of generalization is prejudice and in itself a statement of ignorance and hatred. Honestly, I find that offensive and I'm not even Muslim.

Regarding the generalizations about the "few thousand" violent folks and the billion others.
To me, those numbers seem to support the generalizations more than not...and by that I mean - If there are a billion peace loving Muslims who detest the deplorable violent actions of those who are torching buildings and killing people over a cartoon, why do we not see an OVERWHELMING response against these actions by them?
I'm not saying I agree with the idea that Islam spreads hatred and poverty, but I am very surprised at how this cartoon issue has brought out so much violence and hatred from the followers (to be honest...as of late, I do see it spreading a lot of hatred).

Have the same Muslims who are so offended by the portrayal of Mohammhed (sp?) never treated another religion's figurehead with anything but respect or something?

@julios.

just want to make a little side note about the religious phobia of westerners in general. our fear of being FORCED into following or living certain aspects of our lives based on the religious beliefs of others comes from a long long history of being oppressed by organized religion.

how long did western culture fight against the religious machine? how many millions of our ancestors were killed, tortured or burned at the stake in the name of religion? why did we fight for the seperation of church and state?

we did not become this way because we wanted to, we came to be this way because we had to. to protect ourselves and our families from the beliefs of others.

i was raised a muslim, and up until about 3 years ago, was a very devout and faithful one (started out as a sunni, then a qur'an only muslim) - so i have some first hand experience with the religion. It spreads hate no more than other religions. And I think all the three monotheistic religions spread a "precursor" of hate in a very insidious fashion. By internally categorizing people into believers and nonbelievers, chosen people and not-chosen people, etc., the mind automatically considers these others as different, if not inferior.

I believe this to be a dangerous seed.

Nevertheless, a couple things:

even if NO muslim came out against the violence it still doesn't mean they, or islam, are spreaders of hatred and violence.

Secondly, there are muslim voices that have spoken out against the reactions.

But if we're talking those numbers you mentioned - that this violence represents the manifestation of the opinions of thousands out of billions of Muslims, I would think that we'd see Muslim leaders all over the world taking to the streets and airwaves to stop it or at least speak against it.
I don't know if remaining completely silent would necessarily mean that they are therefore spreaders of hate and violence, but my gut response makes me feel that the silence is sort of a quiet acceptance and assertion of what is happening. I've always wondered if some aren't actually glad that these riots are happening, and even happier that there are people willing to go out and do that kind of 'dirty work' for the faith.
That also applies to Christianity - for example when I see a lack of outrage from the Christian community for things like the murdering of abortion doctors or the bombing of abortion clinics.

And I know that there have been voices speaking out from the Muslim community against the violence here and there, but, again, I expected it to be much louder.

I agree with you on the monotheistic idea.

this is a scary thought, and i've had it too.

I just don't wanna commit to it since I don't wish to speak for the unspoken.
