How about these facts:

Google is buying huge amounts of dark fiber, and placing their own data centers all over the globe, effectively creating an Internet of their own, parallell to the existing one.

Microsoft are forced to adapt their future strategy to the new conditions created by Google. That means moving their focus towards subscription based online services instead of commodity products. Windows Vista for free, but charging for virus/spyware protection, support, data storage etc.

no, you'll only see huge flashing banners on google adsense pages -- websites that advertise through google's system. google will be probably be ad-free forever.
Did you read the big fat quote in $JuggerNaut$'s first post? Or are you relying on other sources that haven't been mentioned in this thread? Because what you're saying goes against what was suggested. Here it is again:
The executives close to the talks said that at AOL's request, Google would begin to test various forms of graphical ads, and that it would make the same formats available to other advertisers. Google has started to sell graphical ads for placement on other sites; plans to do so on Google itself were accelerated by the AOL talks, an executive involved in the negotiations said.
The article is pretty clear that we're talking graphical ads on the Google site itself, not adsense. In fact, the article notes graphical ads already exist with adsense.

that was in the article, but now that it's written in stone, it's worth another view.

nice find. good for google, but do we really need another client?

No we don't, I think it's further proof that Google is competing with Microsoft. Google talk was pretty useless since most people were on MSN and AIM, but now they will bridge the gap for AIM.

I've also heard rumors that Google is considering to buy the Opera web browser?

Another Client, Protocol, or Network?

you're right. should have been more specific. we don't need another protocol.

Google talk uses Jabber protocol and I think it can connect to any other client on Jabber.

Also take a look at stats:

* AIM: 53 million active users (Nielsen//NetRatings, August 2005), 195 million total (January 2003).
* Skype: 45 million total (September 2005).
* MSN Messenger: 29 million active (Nielsen//NetRatings, August 2005), 155 million total (April 2005).
* Yahoo Messenger: 21 million active (September 2005).
* Jabber: 13.5 million enterprise users (Osterman Research August 2005), this does not count users via ISPs and other service providers (estimated to be more than 7.5 million, for a total of at least 21 million).
* QQ: 10 million active, 400 million total users (Tencent Q1 results 2005).
* Gadu-Gadu: 3.6 million total (January 2005).
* ICQ: 15 million active world wide, 400 million total .
* talk (Unix): No data available

it would just be nice to use one client for everything and have everything work. i've used trillian in the past, but haven't for awhile since pro was giving me grief with random crashes (on a reformat no less). miranda? nah. no cam support last time i checked. gaim? well that's what i'm using now, but no cam support there either, so i still fire up the bloat that is msn mssgr unfortunately.

btw, i didn't realize skype had that many users. i wonder if that's based on downloads only or active members?

or not!! \o/

straight from google's mouth:
The recent announcement of the AOL partnership has been the source of a lot of rumors and misconceptions. We'd like to clear some of those up.
There will be no banner ads on the Google homepage or web search results pages. There will not be crazy, flashy, graphical doodads flying and popping up all over the Google site. Ever.

Heh, yep. No cams or voice sucks. I've stuck with Miranda but fire up Skype to chat with my parents at the weekend.

Miranda and GAIM would benefit hugely from more attention. Having even voice support would be a big boost.
