Close enough to think of it that way, yes. By a magnitude of like 1 million to one or something, I would guess.

I played Quake3 using my friends CD key for about 6 months without a problem, we even used to play on the same server.

Q3 let you use a CD-Key twice at once. They set that up a while after it was released tho.

I think it was to make moving between servers easier.

The problem i had with q3 was that i couldn't play online because my key was already in use... those keygenerators can generate leagal keys and than poeple(like me) cannot play although they bought the game.
I reported the problem to id but nevergot an answer

As much as I hate to say it - I buy all my computer games from Best Buy. While they do have some rather interesting business practices (and their Geek Squad sucks), they have a nice big selection of games.

Unfortantaly, since I buy my games, I give away all my rights to produce backup copy of the game incase 1 of the the 4 CD-ROMs gets damaged.

I'm seriously thinking of switching over to an X-Box or some other console verry soon - all this copy protection crap, CD keys getting longer and longer each day - having to reherse 100 alphanumeric characters to read to Microsoft over the phone to re-install Windows XP for the Xth time, and all this Digital Restrictions Management, all this "You can't backup a CD that you bought" shit...

With an X-Box, you never have to enter a product keycode. Never have to worry bout paying $400 for a good video card, and don't have to worry about updates.
