oh, Mac only it seems.
you can also set Windows iTunes to use the Lame encoder (if I recall it correctly).

Get goldwave with the Lame encoder, Goldwave will do batch conversions of entire directories and most of the time keep the file name and transfer the WMA info to the ID3tag.

great tool for recording and wave editing as soon as you get used to their weird mouse selection method :D

possibly, but it let you know which version of LAME you're using? does it get updated (if there is one) when iTunes gets updated?

actually, I just opened iTunes in Windows and I couldn't find how to set an external encoder. I think it was all a dream.
