The article is a bit misleading... Because each country is capable of running the Internet on its own, it's just that at the moment all DNS servers trust the root servers in the US as their base. That *can* be changed, and I don't think it's too major a problem to change it if needed.

The reason it hasn't been just changed is because of domain names, and the potential confusion it could cause if one DNS server points http://www.google.com at one person's website, and another one directs people to joe's auto parts.

in a nutshell, the US is having a cry because it can't control everything :e-boo-inter-hoo:

Yes, the only thing the USA is really controlling is uniqueness of a domain name (i.e. google.com above). The rest of the fears are pretty much bullshit.

Therefore, the question I have is this

Has the USA's control of the domain name categories been adverse?

Note that as far as I know the Netherlands controls its own .nl space and handles the registration - i.e. http://www.me.nl

I'm not immediately aware of any problems, but please feel free to point out heinous USA actions.

Us Canadian's invented the first jet plane to break Mach 3, and the design that ended up being the F16's, so we should control that?

i'de be fine with that. :)
