You can use the iPhone app on the iPad, but I believe they are releasing an iPad specific app in a couple months...

You're right. That was what I read yesterday, but apparently that information was based off an unsubstantiated claim.

Solid upgrade from the 4S. It has a great feel to it between the surprisingly light weight and the shape. Between the cpu speed and the lte speed it is a real joy to use.

Who cares. It's software, mostly data on Apple's servers. I'm sure they'll improve it with time just as Google did. I agree with Memphis, morons who can't function and navigate around a couple of street blocks without their phones are mouth-breathers who deserve to fall down open manhole covers. Fucking first world problems.

I'd expect better from you. First of all making maps is hard. It's not just a case of stuffing data into some database and be done with it. Sure, Apple will probably improve the service over time, but Google is still years ahead. And building solid world-wide maps like Google did takes years, not mere months.
The fact of the matter is that in it's current form, Apple's maps service severely lacks in quality and it is a huge step back for the users. So who benefits from this update if not the users? Probably just Apple themselves.
As for not being able to navigate a few blocks, that's a moronic statement. First, I use Google Maps mostly for navigating while driving my car in areas I don't know. It's like a very advanced TomTom. And again, the service was there before in mint condition and it has been replaced by something that is average at best. It's just a dick move from Apple that screws over their customers. Is that the quality you expect from Apple? What happened to the "it just works" motto? Because clearly, this doesn't work. I can understand people are upset.

Oh and lol at the hypocracy. Apple fanboys criticize Android users for using a supposedly inferior platform, but when Apple screws up and releases crap they line up to catch the bullet and defend Apple, stating that it's not that important a feature anyway. rofl.

It's not really an intentional dick move from Apple, I seriously doubt they sat down and said "Hmm, I bet we could get maximal jimmy rustleage if we switched Google Maps for our own piece of shit version!"
From what I've read, Google was not going to make free turn by turn navigation available for iOS. This is a feature that's been available on the Android version of Google Maps since Eclair [as in, a very long time ago]. As well, Google charges for access to the maps API if it is accessed more than 25,000 times daily [which I'm fairly sure Apple would have been]. Apple was essentially forced to put out their own solution to shore up this massive shortcoming [lack of turn by turn navigation] and I guess secondarily to save API access costs. That they've made a dog's breakfast out of it is rather unfortunate for Apple, to be sure, and terrible for end users. This is a bit of a long game move though. It's going to hurt in the short term, but long term it will a net positive for Apple and their customers as their new mapping service matures.
Having competition in this space is a good thing in any case. Would you want Google Maps to be the only decent mapping service? Having a serious competitor will force them to keep their offering at the cutting edge. They have a huge lead, and I don't expect Apple to catch up any time soon, if at all ever. You're right that this is a matter of years and not months.
Full disclosure: not defending Apple here, merely reasoning on their behalf for the change. I use an Android phone and the only Apple product I own is a 4 year old iPod classic.

Which basically means the costs for the phone were hidden in the carrier fee he pays each month.
