ever seen that BBC series 'the power of nightmares' (i think it's available for download at information clearing house)? it's a while since i saw it so i'm a bit vague on details but it presents pretty convincing evidence that al-qaeda AS AN ORGANISATION is largely non-existent, and the term al-qaeda originated in the West (I think it was with that Curveball guy, not sure). obviously there are people claiming to be "al-qaeda" but it means no more than saying "i'm vegetarian" - there's a commonality but no 'organisation' as such.

the nebulous nature of what it is to be 'al-qaeda' is pretty convenient if you want to lock people up without trial for years, or torture them, or kill them.

i'd bet money that bin laden - the so-called 'leader' of al-qaeda - knew jack shit about this attack in london in advance, or at least had nothing to do with its planning/execution/whatever. he probably heard about it first on CNN like everyone else...

that's why they're called cells. and not every cell that call itself al quaida, is neccessairily approved.
