That's the problem. These new LEGO sets don't allow for homemade designs, or at most in a very limited fashion. They use too many single-purpose prefab parts that are just unusable as anything other than what they were originally intended for.

you guys sound extremely unknowledgeable regarding this, i dont know if ur kids arnt big enough(imposable) or you are just oblivios, but new lego is better than ever, i know because i did tons as a kid and now my kids have and have built many many mnay of the new kits

the new city train desroys the old lego train i had in the 70's for ex.

i will say tho maybe you think they use alot of big proprietary pieces but really many more smaller parts are use than everr b4 giving you that impression.

tell me Eraser and MKJ what were the last 5 modern kits you expirenced and why they were shit?

LEGO thread

My girlfriend's dad is a director at JPL, and when I was in California in February he took me to the HQ in Pasedena to see the rover in person. It was absolutely amazing.

In a car park out the back of the building, they'd constructed a martian surface where they tested it.

I was jetlagged, so don't remember any details, but he pointed out all of these amazing instruments and analysis tools in had on board, as well as a breakdown of some of the materials used to build it.

He also said, very nonchalently, I might add, that he's pretty sure there's (microbial) life on Mars. I was struck by how casual he was about it, it seems most people in his department at JPL think the same. He doesn't think there's life anywhere else in the solar system, though.. He expects that they'll find it within the next few years, or at least near-conclusive evidence of past life.

Yeah, probably not in *this* solar system.
There's a about a billion more solar systems to consider, though.

I think that's why he said solar system and not universe.

I'm talking about the energy consumption needed to make a base habitable there, the cost of building multiple refueling stations from here to Jupiter just for bringing the technology there to make a powerplant there.

Ice means water, so theoretically they can build a plant to extract hydrogen.

It's not going to happen in the next couple of hundreds of years.

Certainly not with NASA's budget being cut every year so the yanks can fund their private wars.

At Christmas he took a crew to somewhere in the ocean to find analogues for Europa; to study lifeforms that thrive around hydrothermal vents believed to reside in the liquid interior. He played me a couple of 1080 videos taken from 5km below the surface of these amazing colourless shrimp that live directly next to these 400 celsius vents spewing out pure sulphur.

He doesn't think Europa has any life though. "probably not" was a direct quote.

It's a moon of water. While the surface is frozen, it has breaks along its surface that indicates that it may be shifting. It has been theorized that gravitational pressures (similar to what keeps the center of the earth molten lava) has kept a layer of liquid water further below the surface. Where there's liquid water, there's potential for life.

He's probably right, but I'll keep hoping. I guess the only thing that does keep the hope alive is that every six months or so scientists keep finding life here on Earth where they don't expect to find it.

If wormy things can survive near 400 degree vents of sulphur dioxide 5km below sea level, then why can't some other wormy things survive in sub-freezing temperatures on Europa? Granted, they would likely need some sort of ancestor to evolve from in order to survive in such extreme circumstances... but I don't think it's wholly impossible. We should go check it out anyway, at least try some delicious Europa water
