I just heard that the path had shifted very slightly east, taking the direct eye just miles east of NO, meaning the worst corner of the storm (upper right) will be closer to the biloxi area or something, and the latest was that it will probably be a high cat 4 at landfall at this point...

Well, they are the world leader in hurricane/storm tracking and every report is based off of the info they provide which means the speculations at Fox News are based off of the NOAA reports.

bear in mind it's the media's job to create panic and it's the governments job to avoid it

It could fill that dome to the top....
I was thinking about the same thing. Not only could it be flooded but with that kind of cat 5 can destroy everything...even a stadium.
People have to leave, there are no place to hide in this type of hurricane.
Wish you all the best of lucks everyone.

The worst thing about all this is that all of New Orleans is below sea level.

E

O's pic is Teahupo in Tahiti, and it's not photoshopped, that's really what it's like on a big day, it breaks over about two feet of water with coral reef under it. There are a lot of surf pics of the place, it's really heavy.
They're saying that New Orleans could be under 15 feet of water by the time this hurricane is done with it.

seremtan wrote:well yes i wasn't clear on that, i meant as % of GDP (as i just responded to daev de paatay poopah). obviously the US having such a large economy the dollar amount will be greater. then again, if europe's overseas aid were calculated as a euro total it would be even greater than that, but that isn't generally done
Cool. It seems the Netherlands rocks for % of GDP. Most of the rest of Europe actually is falling behind their agreed upon goal of 0.7
However, regarding the USA, in the same article with the numbers for the government aid, it also says
http://www.globalissues.org/TradeRelate ... sandGraphs
"Americans privately give at least $34 billion overseas — more than twice the US official foreign aid of $15 billion at that time:"
I'm thinking that if you are going to normalize by the total domestic product, then you should also ***obviously*** use the total foreign aid, not merely the sum from the government.

The American citizens privately give more than double what their government gives.

pussies...
i lived though an 899 mb hurricane. 190mph winds... 3rd strongest on record.
another interesting thing... this hurricane is taking almost an identical path to andrew. cut a swath accross south florida, pick up steam in the gulf and smash into louisiana.
edit:
just looked up the stongest hurricanes on record... according to NOAA:
Gilbert is #1 @ 888 mb
#2. a crazy labor day hurricane from 1935 @ 892
Allen is 3rd with 899
902 would put this cunt 4th... looks like another girl will get her name retired.
and in related news... this is kinda neat :

I just heard them say something about their crew being down near the levee that's breaking.
If there is one breaking already, then there is sure to be some serious damage down there.

Plus, a piece of the SuperDome roof has been torn off and it's leaking.
They're even talking about trying to move people out of it now, though I can't imagine what they think they could do with 10,000 people during the storm.
