it might be site-specific. for instance, the Guardian's mobile site is the same across phone and tablet, but they use a picture res better suited for phone, so it looks wank on tablet. so fucking lazy...

note3 uses a pixeldensity of 3 i think? (retina uses 2). so unless the app/site takes that it mind it simply gets blown up a bit to account for the missing pixels.
it's exactly the same was what the retina devices do.

nice screen, but there is one major flaw with it. It completely undermines its own main selling point...the screen size.

Instead of utilizing that huge screen to be able to do more/ see more, it just bumps up the zoom.
It's a 1920x1080 display. Seems like a decent resolution for a 5.7" screen. In contrast, your 40" TV has the same resolution.

A pixel density of 3? That's like saying "the speed of sound is 340".

3x the default :dork:

so it's like saying Mach 3, to keep us in the sound metaphore.

So what is "the default" pixel density?

1, obviously. And 1 dppx would be 96dpi.
So a device with 3 dppx would be x dpi. Find x.

I think we're talking about two different things here. You used the term pixel density, but that refers to the relation between the size of the screen and the number of pixel it displays (a screen that's 1 inch wide that has a horizontal resolution of 200px has a horizontal pixel density of 200 DPI). For instance, my 2 year old 4.3 inch 540x960 phone has a pixel density of roughly 256 PPI. An iPhone 4/5 has a pixel density of 326 PPI.

What I think you mean is that while the display of an iPhone 4 has a resolution of 640x960, the resolution a developer is targeting is only half that resolution (320x480, which conveniently is the same resolution as pre-iPhone 4 devices). So every pixel the developer draws to the screen is doubled (maybe filtered/interpolated in some way?), which is probably where your values of 2 and 3 come from. Not sure where your 96 dpi figure comes from though.

Also, I'd like to be referred to some document that talks about this difference in design resolution and display resolution when it comes to the Note 3, because I'm pretty sure that by default, Android doesn't work this way. It just treats display resolutions as hard resolutions.

it's the old csspixel (dppx) vs screenpixel (dpi) debate.
Lea Verou has some nice things to say; http://dpi.lv/ as does Drew Wells http://drewwells.net/blog/2013/working-with-dppx/

and yes, Android does use dppx. Difference with iOS is that Android relies on the hardware to do it while iOS uses primarily a software solution; the interpolation you mentioned. a bane to all.

In simple terms. Mobile browsers 'report' a specific resolution to websites... this makes sense since their native resolution would end u up with tiny text, tiny everything. Problem is, the note 3 reports a ridiculously small resolution to sites, (for its size) hence the
Exagerated end result, and terrible images

Jesus fucking christ guys, since when did you all grow a fucking vagina ?

Arguing the merits of resolution on a fucking phone !. Why don't we just make a thread about handbags instead ?
