google the top gear track if you aren't familiar with the curves.

like watson said, being lighter on the brakes in certain turns will give you the advantage. the elise part is pure hell. i was on to a 1st place finish only to spin out on the follow through.

also to keep in mind, the AI is incredibly consistent every time you attempt the top gear races. you're pretty much the only factor that changes the outcome of the race. use this to your advantage. if you find that a car is constantly getting in your way or bumping you off the track in a particular spot then try changing your approach just a little bit. it essentially comes down to course/AI memorization and micro-management of the car.

I've owned 3 wheels (Act Labs Force RS, and Logitech Driving Force pro before this one) and this is easily the best wheel I've ever used. Very smooth and strong feedback, very accurate sensitivity with no mechanical dead zone, + it's super comfortable. Unfortunately GT5 doesn't have the greatest FF in the business and I've read the clutch support is slightly wonky but it's still a completely different game than with the DS3.
The club sport pedals are where it's at though. Every other wheel set overlooks how important the pedals are and the fanatec ones are fucking ace. Super solid construction, fully adjustable, but the brake is where they shine. It uses an adjustable load sensor so the amount of force applied to the pedal is used to determine brake pressure not the pedal travel. It also has a little rumble motor under the pedal which is adjustable on the wheel to a brake pressure threshold to give you haptic feedback which lets you know you're braking hard enough to lock the wheels.

Personally I only use the flappy paddles in GT5 since fanatec hasn't released the *good* club sport shifter they're working on so I still use my old Act Labs shifter which is PC-Only. Also they're just faster... and when it comes to Gran Turismo games I'm always interested in faster lap times, since I know the level of realism isn't going to reach GTR level on the PC (though GT5 is as close as a console has gotten).

--- They have another one coming out soon called the 911 GT2 and that one will be the same wheel I have with added Xbox 360 support on-top of the PS3 and PC support mine has.
Your Fanatec wheel is awesome and highly revered, along with the G25/G27. Skip to 13:49 of this video, they talk about your wheel with GT5 http://www.youtube.com/user/simracingto ... GVbF8Mg3ZQ

Also, there's a video on youtube made by these same guys if you're interested where they do a five wheel shootout including yours.

I use my old thrustmaster force feedback wheel, still works great and gets me fast laptimes in time trial (which is all I do, I don't race). I use the left and right paddles for F1, and used them in NFS Shift too earlier in the year. I never bother with the stick shift. Paddles are right under my finger, it's much faster. There's no way I could get as quick laps with a gear stick.

ok, I do have a warning for you. There is no cash cow in this game. Unlike previous GT games you only win the prize car once so prize money is all we've got to go on now... no infinite well of Veyrons to sell. This means that if you're like me and not really frugal at all (i like variety) you'll get to the extreme a-spec stuff were you *need* a race car to have a prayer against a field of LMP1 prototypes. While the Viper ACR is a 1000hp gorilla, it doesn't generate nearly the aero of the LMP1 cars so you get boned in every corner.
Silver lining... b-spec gives you different (better) prize cars than a-spec. So if you run b-spec bob up to GT World; you'll get a Zonda R which is enough of a race car to hang with the Pesky's and R10's.

Anyone giving GT Academy a whirl?
Just gave it a quick poke today; currently I'm in 10th for the NE united state and 22nd nation wide. Getting out of the first round is probably going to be the biggest hurdle... with 5 weeks to work on the hot-laps the margins are going to be razor thin by the end.

-----
Edit: slipped to 37th, 17th, and 6th... 11th total in the NE.
@ + 3.153 behind first place in the country. I need to work harder.

so after my first couple laps on each track im at ~1500 on the first two and ~1000 on the last for my region. looking at the top times i'm pretty sure i can make it into the top precentile seconds-wise, but tenths, hundreds and thousands-wise i'm pretty much fucked. i need the force feedback, and if i do end up with a wheel it won't be until sometime after the new year.

i'm totally diggin the special events though. exp & credits for online mode is nice too. actually makes it worthwhile to keep playing the game and actually check out the online mode.

doc, i saw you post in wrs thread on gtplanet when the game was first released. looking forward to starting that series up again.

haven't had much play time as my setup is currently living in a friends basement. both setups on platforms he fabricated out of old exercise equipment and various racing seats we got from a mini tuning shop in the neighborhood years ago. loving the g27.

Finally picked up a PS3 and started playing GT5 this past weekend. Just completed all license tests with gold early this morning :) Had to reacquaint myself with the DFP after not using it for 4 ½ years (luckily it still works…). Love the cockpit view, which is the view I generally use with the premium cars, and initially I would use the paddle shifters, but now I find myself using the stick shifter more and more.

I noticed that with the license tests, they have the traction control set to 5 and ABS set to 1. I suppose that makes it more comparable to real-life driving. I had tried changing the ABS to 0 and found that the wheels can be locked with just a slight touch of the brake pedal, which of course is not realistic (the locking effect/sensation is simulated through the steering wheel, since the brake pedal has no force feedback).

While the license tests aren’t as hard as they used to be, some of them are made artificially hard by the bogus and very inconsistent disqualification system. There were so many times when I cleanly passed the AI cars only to be wacked by them on the side and get disqualified :disgust: Other times I felt that I should have been disqualified but wasn’t  For example, I noticed that on some courses you can actually cut the corners quite a lot without being disqualified (e.g., those chicanes at Monza or Le Mans). In one of the rally license tests, I actually wacked the perimeter pretty hard coming out of the hairpin but wasn’t disqualified and ended up 2-3 seconds faster than the required time for gold, and that was on my 1st try when I didn’t even know the track. I was like “WTF, but I’ll take it!” :paranoid:

Graphically, it looks great overall, but when you start looking closely, it’s a mixed bag of good and bad. I wish the game is running in 720p instead of 1080p so they could add more details and make it look even better where needed, and there are still moments when you get very noticeable frame rate drops (e.g., first chicane at Monza in the S-1 license test). I also wish they could just concentrate on the premium cars and spent the effort on creating a better and more realistic damage system. Having 1000 cars is nice, but it doesn’t matter when I don’t care for more than probably 90% of them.

Also, I had the game freezing on me twice already  The first time was right after I had gotten gold in one of the license tests, so it wasn’t saved and had to do it again :disgust:

any one want an audi TT-R touring car?
game gave me one as a random reward car yet I'd already grabbed one for the DTM event long ago. Game won't let me sell it and I don't want to delete it so if anyone wants a 1 mil credit DTM car let me know.

I stopped playing it. Great game but I'm one of the racing game noobs who enjoys brainless stuff like PGR or GRID (or even Forza although it has slightly more customization to it) than this.

i'll take it if you haven't given it away yet. i still need to do that event.
in fact a lot of the events that i have left need specific cars that cost an arm and leg new so i keep hoping they show up in a used lot. at the moment i'm saving up for that F1 car in the online dealer. only 1 mil to go so hopefully i'll snag it before the cars rotate.

i've come to love b-spec mode. at first i was super anal about coaching my drivers through the race and this just seemed like an incredible waste of time. at some point though, i just said F it. now i don't care if the driver wins or not and i just have to check in on the game ever 10 or 20 minutes to go through screen prompts. it's absolutely worth working through at least up until you win the Zonda. I'm not sure i've ever driven a car as fun as the Zonda.

yea i still have it i'll gift it to ya. big :D  from me for the Zonda R. It's not only the most fun car I've found in the game, I was hot lapping it fully tuned on Tokyo 246 and it made me think it was one of the most incredible cars in any GT game (it eats that track >:E ). I'm beginning to wonder if Zonda's are just magical cars. Every game I've bumped into one recently (even NFS HP) the Zonda is always giddy fun. If they're even 90% as good in the carbon as the silicon those fucking things are worth every penny.

finally got it, bored with it so far.

I don't understand why the licenses are so strict then you don't have to worry about any of the shit once you actually race.

On that note, I understand DQing you for hitting other cars but I'd think they would have spent some time on detecting that properly instead of making the cars pretty. Getting DQd by the 2nd place guy running into me just because he hit my front is pretty lame. Also, they DQ you for touching in the NASCAR races. Brilliant.

lol. yeah the DQ rules are stupid as hell. though once you get a feel for them you can start to abuse the shit out of them and bumb around all you want. really, they're just trying to make you a more aware driver...but that's kinda hard to do when, like you said, the AI will blindly run into you and cause a DQ.

i'm currently trying to do the FGT races but it's impossible with a controller. i need accurate control with the pedals which simply can't be done on that shitty ps3 controller. accelerating means massive wheel spin which means loss of traction which means slower accel and decreased grip. braking means full lock which means longer decel and whip-like oversteer. what sucks is that the AI never takes the fastest line, but it's the most intrusive. they don't adapt either. the race turns into pure bumper cars because the dualshock 3 is a piss poor controller and that AI doesn't know how to properly brake/bob and weave.

the seasonal races are a nice way to keep things freash, but once they lifted the restrictions i find myself just tuning a car enough so that i barely have to try. though that recent with the cappuccinos was a good race. thx wats for the car :D

this game is obviously flawed in a billion ways. but when comes to driving it can't be beat. i'll be throwing down for a proper wheel and pedal setup (thinking the gt2) in the next few months so that i can actually drive these machines like they're meant to be driven.

wats. thx for that audi. that car is awesome. the cappuccino is fun too. slow as hell but great for drifting.

Right on.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I am enjoying it so far, I'm just kind of disappointed in that it merely seems to be GT4 with better graphics. It's a bit pointless to show you how to be a good driver on the license test and then not have any penalty in actual races, but maybe I just haven't gotten there yet.

I've pretty much resigned myself to not being able to get gold on some of these with a controller. While it might be possible it's just not worth it to me, especially with license tests that DQ you with no traction control etc. etc.

So far it's been the only challenge tho, but I'm sure the special events will be pretty hard. So far I've only bought the first car that it made me buy, and the only money I've spent was about 5k on a Vitz and maybe 25k on a Miata, and only had 2 or 3 races where I didn't walk away with it. I'll wait till the later events to pass judgment, from what people had said I didn't expect them to set me up as well as they did with the cars.

Off the top of my head you win the 80something Civic race car early on, then when you hit lvl 12 or so there's an 80s Japanese race group where I nearly lapped the last place by the end of the 5 laps. Sure, I could drive something else, but why get a shittier car and dump money into it when they gave me a beast that meets the requirements without even changing the oil?

Even a few of the non-race cars have been quick enough to take it away, and the ones that weren't the drivers in the race were awful (but it is the first two series of course).

werd; that TT-R always the most awesome DTM car. I have a spare Red Bull x2010 now. The game gives you at least two of them. One for the Sebastian Vettel challenge special event (fuck he's good). And the second one I think is just free for hitting B-Spec lv35.
If you want to borrow one until you get your own I could hook you up. Although I do also think Ferrari 330 P4 is pretty and am open to trades. ;)

we should have some fun wheel to wheel sometime; though I don't think I've ever seen you online at the same time as me.

alright who thought a night country race was a good idea....I have to turn on the race line to even see the fucking road.

pretty fireworks

Also meant to ask: Are the shadows still pretty shitty for everyone? They're showing up in big blocks and with hard cuts and for a game that gets the reflection on the hood so great this seems like something is wrong with my set up.
