The point I'm trying to make is that games "a la 2011" are relying heavily on scripted sequences and stuff like that. It seems to be the norm and, as it appears to be, at the other end of the scale as where id Software games are. People complain about either game. It never appears to be right.

Some direction is necessary in single player games, but I do agree with you that linear gameplay seems to be the norm. That's what makes games like Mass Effect look so much better because they break away from the rest of the pack.

I share some of the concerns here that Rage looks like it may be another boring FPS from the past decade, but it's not fair to judge its gameplay before we've actually had a chance to play it. I still maintain that I haven't really been looking forward to Rage all that much, I'm much more excited for Doom 4

The Dead Space games were pretty linear and scripted, but Visceral know how to make it work by making it feel like you're experiencing the events in the game, rather than watching them play out on a screen.

Is that true? That was one of the only things bugging me about it. Hopefully you can remove the cut-scene deaths, too.
Sure is. They officially announced it yesterday. Location markers are also optional. Good times.

Isn't it an optional perk you can upgrade to in Deus Ex? Which is much better.

Still, the levels DO look... Closed off. I'm hoping that what we have seen is just early game stuff and that it opens up much more. But its still on my list as a day one, thats for sure.

I don't think there was anything in the original DX that made everything glow oraaaaange to this extent (it was lemon lime instead ;)) but yeah, DX had all passive and non-passive augs as optional and you only upgrade them if you want them and/or it suits your gamestyle. Much better solution and again, this was done 10 years ago.

The levels i've seen in DX:HR seem quite small so far, but i'm sure they'll expand massively when the full game is actually released. It's obvious they're keeping their cards close to their chest, so lets hope for some epic hong kong style massive area locations. Apparently theres little load times in the actual maps too, since after the initial load, it's streamed I believe... don't quote me on that though.

Anyway if it does end up being a claustrophobic cluster fuck, we only have to wait a few more months for Skyrim.

Aye exactly, Skyrim... Gives me a semi just thinking about it. But DE:HR SHOULD be ok, if they listen to the complaints... Shame they refuse to fix the, quite honestly, laughable voice over work they have so far. Reminds of Metroid: Other M, just a constant single level dull drone for talk.... A bit like Doombrain in many ways.

I'm pretty sure that's both untrue and completely impossible.

Circle circle circle strafe, shoot shoot, reload, shoot, strafe, walk into object, lose visibility, strafe strafe, circle circle, defeat irrelevant monster, end of set piece. Move onto next linear battle.

k that was a nice video, made want to be IN that world. but yeah it felt linear...I hope that you will encounter alot of speaking / communicating humans along the way, as the lack of speech (even if it's just an enemy yelling out "what was that over there") might make it feel a little lifeless. I'm so used to character interaction in games, when it's not there it feels lonely :(

Yeahso, if Deus Ex is your kinda thing, you should definitely give both Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines and Alpha Protocol a look. Both are a little rough around the edges, but both come closer to that Deus Ex ideal than any game since Deus Ex itself. I ragged on Alpha Protocol hard when it first came out, but once I'd got out of the training level (surely one of the worst in gaming history), it completely sucked me in.
And while the last quarter of Vampire has little to recommend it, prior to that it's an incredible experience, especially when played as a Malkavian.

Yeah ok, but if every FPS game exactly copied DE game dynamics, we'd also be bitching about lack of originality.
I don't have high hopes for Rage, just an old school id shooter with some driving and rpg elements thrown in + sweet new graphics.
That'll do me; sounds perfect.

EDIT:
What cunt deemed it necessary to not allow nested quoting.
This manually editing quotes is fucking annoying

Uhm, the gameplay looks completely unimpressive. Shit, even. And what in the fuck is that instakill boomerang thing? How completely gay.
