lol awesome. Not entirely a fair comparison but it's true that GRID is an exceptionally cool racing game.Captain Mazda wrote:http://www.youtube.com/v/ozyjq0W-Kas

Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
I'm up to s-8 but it was pissing me off so I took a break. The outside passing on nascar is what has pissed me off the most so far (aside from being arbitrarily DQ in races). So damn hard with analog sticks. I see a lot of MR2 and Supra in my list so I'll keep an eye out. I'm still needing a classic euro and jap car for those beginner races :SGrandpa Stu wrote:Just completed all the license tests last night. you'll get a few cars that you can use for the events that are pretty decent. for instance, i got a truck to use in that truck only race from the iB or iA sequence. can't remember which exactly.
i've managed all gold in the B level, all silver up through iB, and then settled for bronze in iA and S. i'd have silver on the iA but the last test (2-lap battle with a Gallardo) is a major pain the ass. the game is pretty sketch on how it decides to disqualify for car bumping. i've been DQ'd for apparently being "too close" as there was no audible thud or vibration from the controller. other times i'll see the computer racers veer off the track, only to then veer back into me causing a DQ. on the flipside i'll occasionally slam into the other cars, fulling expecting a DQ, but the game just rolls with it and keeps on playing.
i also beat the Gran Turismo World Championship event in the pro series and a got a sweet veyron that's painted with two tones of green. FYI, anyone who pre-ordered this from amazon, the stealth mercedes you got can dominate this event. i even have a replay of me flipping the car on its side and still managing to squeek back to first on the last lap
oh, and uh, i've been looking for a 2nd gen MR2 and a 4th gen Supra. I've seen them both come up in the used car lot in the past, one time each, but didn't have the funds at the time for either. if you come accross either of these and have the funds and are willing to trade let me know. i have 50+ cars now and enough money in the bank to buy something if I don't already have what you want for trade. Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
sweet deal. i see quite a few of the euro and jap classics come up so if i come across any all snag them. you have a preference for the type? i've got a few in my garage but nothing i'm willing to trade at the moment. however i will set them up for friend use. not sure if you can use shared cars in races or not though.
btw, i can confirm that this game has the super rare special black cars in the used dealer lot. came across a black veyron with 0 miles and significantly better stats than the green one i won. cost 2 mil and required a level of 21 though

Impressive...
Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
I picked up a really nice 280z for my classic jap car so I just need a nice high powered classic euro ride for that event. I'd take a 90s 300zx if you want to send one of those over. Going to collect all the Zs.Grandpa Stu wrote:sweet deal. i see quite a few of the euro and jap classics come up so if i come across any all snag them. you have a preference for the type? i've got a few in my garage but nothing i'm willing to trade at the moment. however i will set them up for friend use. not sure if you can use shared cars in races or not though.

It sucks that the view friends profile screen seems to be broken for showing their licenses. I finished off my S the other day but I didn't get any golds.
Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
Be nice if they took more advantage of being internet connected. I have hopes they update the community screen so you can not only trade cars but share replay files. Would make giving people a ghost to chase a bit easier.
Still it's nice that you can just "export" them onto a flash drive. Certainly beats the gameshark / pro action replay bullshit that was needed before to get things off the memory card and onto the internet.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
Finally nabbed it, I suck so I settled for silvers in my first license. Then bought a cheap second hand Nissan Silvia and have managed to enhance it a fair bit since then. Won some go-kart races and two sets of class A races. Great game \o/

watson, do you have a driving wheel setup, or do you have godly skills with the ps3 controller?
Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
Hehe yea. Initially I was going to try for gold in all the license tests . I must have tried the first test of the first license [break test] at least 50 times [PS3 controller]. Gold was something like 13.300 seconds and the best I could muster was 13.337 =[
Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
Just got this yesterday. After about 40 minutes of things I was able to start driving a Mazda Miata with 118 hp. I love and hate the detail of this game.
The intro movie is pretty cool.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
I got the Silvia because it had slightly higher bhp/ton relative to the Miata on offer D:
Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
I have no idea what details I need to pay attention to when buying a car - I have no idea how to tune the cars for best results, tires, etc., all that stuff. This game will probably not be something I put a lot of time into as I prefer to sit down and drive fast - like the PGR games allowed you to do. It's incredibly well done though.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
Sure, thanks. I'm on the PS3 controller and have been content with bronze. But I won't be playing much with Cataclysm dropping tonight.

i do the rally stuff with the ds3 though.
oh pro-tip for this game... do the special events as soon as you have the right level.
you get shit-tonnes of cash real quickly.

is the force feeback in the peddles and wheel comperable to driving a real car? i can't help but feel that not being able to recieve proper feedback is holding me back, but at the same time i'm not ready to drop $300ish if the feedback is subpar. also, are you using a shifter or the flappy paddles? just curious to how the clutch feels if you're using the shifter addon.Dr_Watson wrote:viewtopic.php?p=841856#p841856Grandpa Stu wrote:watson, do you have a driving wheel setup, or do you have godly skills with the ps3 controller?

Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
I've owned 3 wheels (Act Labs Force RS, and Logitech Driving Force pro before this one) and this is easily the best wheel I've ever used. Very smooth and strong feedback, very accurate sensitivity with no mechanical dead zone, + it's super comfortable. Unfortunately GT5 doesn't have the greatest FF in the business and I've read the clutch support is slightly wonky but it's still a completely different game than with the DS3.Grandpa Stu wrote:is the force feeback in the peddles and wheel comperable to driving a real car? i can't help but feel that not being able to recieve proper feedback is holding me back, but at the same time i'm not ready to drop $300ish if the feedback is subpar.Dr_Watson wrote: viewtopic.php?p=841856#p841856

The club sport pedals are where it's at though. Every other wheel set overlooks how important the pedals are and the fanatec ones are fucking ace. Super solid construction, fully adjustable, but the brake is where they shine. It uses an adjustable load sensor so the amount of force applied to the pedal is used to determine brake pressure not the pedal travel. It also has a little rumble motor under the pedal which is adjustable on the wheel to a brake pressure threshold to give you haptic feedback which lets you know you're braking hard enough to lock the wheels.
Personally I only use the flappy paddles in GT5 since fanatec hasn't released the *good* club sport shifter they're working on so I still use my old Act Labs shifter which is PC-Only. Also they're just faster... and when it comes to Gran Turismo games I'm always interested in faster lap times, since I know the level of realism isn't going to reach GTR level on the PC (though GT5 is as close as a console has gotten).also, are you using a shifter or the flappy paddles? just curious to how the clutch feels if you're using the shifter addon.
--- They have another one coming out soon called the 911 GT2 and that one will be the same wheel I have with added Xbox 360 support on-top of the PS3 and PC support mine has.
Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
I'm a complete noob with GT games and while I like the game overall, I can't force myself to sit through some of the boring stuff like racing VW vans in the special event, etc.
By the way, on that first VW bus race in the special events, is there a trick I am missing with it? I'm not able to make up any ground on the leaders no matter how well I drive.
Also, can a bad car purchase screw you up to the point where you have to start over? For example - you blow your money on a car that doesn't do you much good, can't win with it, don't have other eligible races, etc...or can you spend money pretty freely as you progress?

Re: Gran Turismo 5 trailer
As you play the game more you'll come to realize the boring stuff was what was fun all along. I love driving the slow races and the one makes and all of those, they teach you how to drive right so when you finally get supercars you can actually do something with them.
You can't fuck up buying cars too much unless you dump way too much money into them, or you buy something redundant or fairly useless for the races. You should take a look at the races and pick cars that should be able to compete in multiple races and be competitive.
Earlier in the thread someone was talking about dumping 200k or something a civic, and while I was being a dick there was some good advice in there. Pick things that will work in multiple classes:
Like, Get a japanese FR turbo and that covers three different races at least, as well as open ones. Then perhaps get an american FF NA and you've covered another 3 race types at least. See?
Edit: This is general advice, I've only played about an hour on a friend's and I don't know all the race types. If there's a get-rich-quick race like the special condition in 4 that gave you a 250,000 car, then all this goes right out the window. I'll be buying this game in a few months, its my hell month for school coming up and I know if I get it now it'll be bad news.

you pass basically everyone under braking in chicago and hammer-head.tnf wrote:By the way, on that first VW bus race in the special events, is there a trick I am missing with it? I'm not able to make up any ground on the leaders no matter how well I drive.
the one after that has lotus elise's on ice skates (comfort hard tyres)... it's easily one of the hardest things in the game, haven't gotten better than 2nd.
