Yeah, the kicker there is the CPU. I have an AMD2600+ and 6600 w/256mb, and I can get the same FPS at 1024x768 that I get at 800x600, so the limit is the CPU.

It would appear that you pretty much need something over a 3.0 CPU, and a 256mb video card to get most of the eye candy.

Keep in mind that shadows are a huge CPU hog, so if you turn off shadows, you should get a solid performance increase.

Seems to me like the min cpu req. should be 2.5 ghz.... would it even be playable on a 2 ghz and a 9700?

Yes, but not enjoyable in multiplayer. Unless you really, really tweak the config and make it look completely like ass.

No reason MP should be as demanding as it is.

If you want a game that will run well on a 4 year old system, keep playing Quake 3.

My computer is 2 years old. I put the "lowest" Pentium 4 in it when I built it (2.4GHz was the lowest at the time). It was right when the 3.2GHz CPUs came out.

Now why should a game that comes out two years later work great on hardware even less than what I used?

I think it's a little odd that singleplayer gives much lower fps then multiplayer. At times you have up to 7 or 8 people fighting you in singleplayer. But with multiplayer you have 2 or 3 people at the same time and the fps just drops like crazy and on smaller maps also. I think it could be poor netcode.

Also for SP, the AI has to be processed.

I don't know what it is.

Sorry I meant to say SP gives much higher FPS then MP. There is quite a bit of AI in Quake4, and still you get 10-20 FPS more.

Also I made a server to try some jumps and like 5 or 6 people joined, I was able to play with no big fps drops. While everyone else was having as shitty time with 100-150 ping. It's definitely sometype of a netcode/fps connection, really odd.

I don't think raven fixed anything in the netcode, doom3 had the same issue.
