But if he had touched the cop, he would have been beaten and locked up, and there would also be people declaring that he deserved what he got because the cop was trying to detain him.

It's a whole different world with cops, as far as actions and reactions are concerned, and for that reason alone they should be scrutinized for violent behavior and should be punished exactly the same as anyone else when they use force that is not necessary.

Sure, a cop has the right to pummel some dumbass who's being a prick, just like any of us have the right to do that. But he also has the right to be locked up for it, just like any of us would be, for infringing on that person's rights.

That's the fine line that we as society have to walk when we entrust people with such enormous power. It's ridiculous to me that cops ahve to go through shitloads of 'racial sensitivity' training because some assholes beat the shit out of some immigrant. Some proper psychological screening in the recruitment process would go a long way towards preventing these occurrences.
The frightening truth is that cops can get away with murder, literally, in the moment. They might get nailed for it later, but at the time they can do as they please. As such, I'm all for investigating suspect incidents and meting out punishment when warranted. What I hate is the knee-jerk overreaction to these incidents, especially when the "victim" is a minority.

Yea, there are a lot of people who will pounce on any incident to try to use it as proof of their beliefs about the "system" and the "man."

I personally think paying cops a whole lot more would be a good start to solving the problems.

I'll do it.. give me a match and an act of congress. I'd leave the French Quarter for it's history, not it's tourism, though
