hypocrisy++.
but at the same time predictable. It's all about sympathizing with the most popular group of victims at the time...laugh at birth defects.., pity the muslim citizens, etc....
wasn't it goof that posted the pic laughing about how dumb the british soldiers are (the pic with the guy on fire...)?
I didn't blow the baby's arms off and then laugh about them being gone, then imply that all babies' arms should be blown off, which is the behavior I was criticizing.
And for what it's worth, I still felt bad for laughing at the picture. Even though I have no way of knowing if that is a real baby with that condition, or if it's just a photoshop job like every other forum-joke-jpeg that gets posted.
Either you completely misunderstood the point I was trying to make, or you're lashing out at me because of some generalization you've made about me, because my stance isn't what you described.
And for the record, I don't think there's anything funny about dead or deformed people, but I admit have had quite a few guilty laughs throughout my life at off-colored jokes about such things because they struck me funny -- not because I thought it was funny that a baby was born deformed. I don't think that necessarily makes me a bad person or a hypocrite.
To clarify - my post wasn't directed just at you and chunks for laughing. It was a general post, and something that has bugged me for a long time....every time I see the "arguing on the internet..." pic with the special olympic kid.

there aren't any. I guess I don't have my finger on the pulse of this community and their tendencies quite like you do.
phantom justification...jesus christ we have 5 years plus of posting histories to look at....apparently, though, not finding any humor whatsoever in a baby with no arms has offended you...

i didn't find anything funny about that picture
in any case, there's a big difference between "look ma, no arms due to a birth defect" and "look ma, no arms due to them being blown off by an american cluster bomb in a war for greed and power". neither are terribly funny, but they are terribly different
the issue here isn't about them being different - the bottom line is that it is selective sympathy for tragedy based on what bandwagon one feels like being on.
For example - folks posted pics making fun of the Katrina victims here...the black guys with the watermelons in the shopping carts, etc, all with laughs abounding....
If I were to post pics making fun of Iraqis who had fell victim to a bomb, whatever, folks would shit in their hats...
Just explain to me - why is it ok to laugh at a baby with no arms, or to laugh a mentally retarded kid running in a race, or whatever, but completely out of line to make jokes about other tragedies?
I work with kids that face those types of challenges every day, and deal with the pricks who make fun of them too, and the bottom line is - kids with problems like that who make it to school every day despite the comments, laughing, etc., have more nuts than the collective lot of the folks who do PS jobs to get a quick laugh at their misfortune.
this isn't about the difference between being born with no arms and being blown up by an American soldier. It's about why it is OK to laugh at one, but not about the other.
why do some people laugh at lee evans and some people laugh at chris rock ? theyre both comics but why one and not the other ?
because people laugh at different things
i bet you any money theres poeple out there now laughing at the people with arms n leg blown off in iraq and not one of them is laughing at that pic
there are also people out there which im sure find both are unfunny....
just becaue we find one thing funny and another thing not doesnt mean that we fit into a group
-----------------
also like i said there were 2 poeple laughing at that post and i didnt even see those pics of the army guys laughing at the iraq's
so out of those 2 posts, 1 of us didnt fit into your category
so how come you made a decision on us with a 50/50 result

still missing the whole point - and this wasn't pointed at you and rook alone.
also you do fit into a group if you find pics of kids with disabilities and little captions making light of it funny - you fit into the group that gets a laugh from things like that.
good or bad, that's just how it is.

BTW, the army opened an inquiry into the pictures and pretty much immediately closed it, finding no felony wrongdoing. They never verified the people who were in the pictures or whether they were wartime pictures from current wars.

I have heard a couple of people say that these pictures violate the Geneva Convention though. Does anybody know if there's any truth to that?

i seriously doubt they violate the geneva convention. otherwise journalist pix of, say, that little girl covered in napalm from vietnam, would be illegal, which clearly they aren't
i don't think the legality of these pictures is the issue. not everything amoral is illegal. if it were, corporations wouldn't exist and donald trump would be pumping iron in san quentin

Yea, that's why I was asking. It seems like a lot of bloggers and such are crying about the Geneva Conventions on this, but I don't think I've ever heard any parts of it that would be broken by this situation.
Seems like wishful thinking.

The Geneva Conventions require respect for "the remains of persons who have died for reasons related to occupation or in detention resulting from occupation or hostilities and those of persons not nationals of the country in which they have died as a result of hostilities."
Curtin said the investigation would try to verify the authenticity of the images and the identity of any U.S. personnel before it can determine if any prosecutable offense or violation of military policy exists.
"The photos show close ups of military uniforms and closeups of human body parts found allegedly in the streets of Iraq," Boyce said. "The military will work the matter within the chain of command in Iraq to ensure that personnel are aware of appropriate conduct and continue their sensitivity to the remains of local citizens and members of our Armed Forces -- since in some of the photos it is even difficult to discern the identity of the deceased."

I guess it is a Geneva violation then, judging from that.
So the military said it would "try to verify the authenticity of the images and the identity of any U.S. personnel," but closed the investigation without doing either of those.
I love it when the military investigates itself, you never know for sure what's going to happen. Oh, the suspense!
