This thread is more appropriately titled, so I'll let it stay...
The money is good, but I have a hatred for Suckerberg and don't want Oculus profits going towards Fagsbook. I don't see how Fagsbook's business strategy (assuming they even have one) aligns with Oculus. I just hope they don't interfere and milk Oculus dry.

Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
Honestly if I was 21-year-old Palmer Luckey and I got a $2b deal for my company, I'd just call it a day and go on as a venture capitalist or entrepreneur. I would rather try to diversify and invest in other tech start-ups and become the next Elon Musk.
It's a ground breaking technology, but I think other companies (such as Sony) will catch up really soon. I wouldn't bank everything on Oculus.

Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
this is why I'll never invest in a startup
Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
Outside of the gaming scene, I think there are plenty of social aspects to VR that can be tapped. VR holidays with family members that live far apart, for instance. Imagine taking an on-rails tour of Carlsbad Caverns National Park with Aunt Ruth or the in-laws without leaving your couch. Take care of obligatory get-togethers with relatives you don't really want to hang out with, but without the hassle of actually going on hated road trips to visit them.obsidian wrote:This thread is more appropriately titled, so I'll let it stay...

There's money in virtual tours, mark my words...

I think that Palmer Luckey is more in it for the tech and engineering than the entrepreneurship.ToxicBug wrote:Honestly if I was 21-year-old Palmer Luckey and I got a $2b deal for my company, I'd just call it a day and go on as a venture capitalist or entrepreneur.
Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
Oh, Notch just canceled the deal for his Oculus version of Minecraft over this. He doesn't want to work with Facebook. Doesn't trust 'em.
Re: Occulus VR acquisition....

Things to consider....
[*] Carmack is an employee
[*] Carmack isn't exactly short of money
[*] Carmack is highly intelligent
[*] Carmack does what he feels like... Wether it's designing 3D engines to exterminate virtual demons, or it's sending rockets to space... He does as he feels.
[*] Carmack is a godfather of gaming
If Occulus goes off track after this acquisition completes... What's the likelihood Carmack will stick around? Wait for the impacts of this deal before you put nails in this amazing products coffin

Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
I seem to be one of the few people in the world actually excited by this news...
With proper input technology, VR can definitely replace the limited interfaces we deal with today. The Rift is another step towards direct neural interfaces and seamless, uninhibited interaction. Zuckerberg can see this and has taken steps to once again be at the forefront of a shift in the relationship between humans and computers. I'm glad he wants to support the gaming product first, and then grow it into its true potential. And Facebook definitely has the money, engineers, and connections to ensure the Rift succeeds.

Still think VR sets in general will be nothing more than a gimmick and won't be replacing shit, like the spaz stick for the wii
