I always love how the typical American response to controlling gun violence is to give people more guns.

i see breivik's lawyer is already floating the 'insanity' defence to see how it flies. bullshit. breivik was totally sane, that's what's so scary

i was reminded of the time madeleine albright was presented during an interview with the facts about the 750,000 people (2/3 of them kids) killed by sanctions in iraq during the 1990s, and she responded by saying "we think it was a price worth paying"*. if breivik is insane, then so is she - and if she's insane then what does that say about the rest of us?

* you can substitute blair justifying the iraq war here also

Most murderers are cowards. Most murder victims are unarmed. Do the math foreigner. :disgust:

so is the spelling :)

peenyuh knows that all murderers are cowards because the national enquirer told him so - right between the piece about obama's death squads for grandma and the full colour exposé of the anal probe performed on the entire baldwin family by aliens

actually, I think it makes it a lot less scary.
yes its fucked up what he did, but at least he had a thought out rationale behind it.

but also more scary, because it means we can't interpose a psychic distance between 'us' and him, between 'sane' and 'insane'. if he's a totally sane man who did what he did because he thought it was the 'right thing to do' in the context of his own belief system, then he's pretty much like everyone sane, except that his belief system is more fucked up than most people and he had the conviction to follow it through to its logical and murderous conclusion (hence my reference to madeleine albright's justification of the iraq sanctions; blair's justification for the iraq war would do just as well as an example - unfortunately, while the landmarks of breivik's logic may be unfamiliar to us, the terrain on which they stand is all too familiar)

Send a "death squad" down any average street in America and watch what happens.

If rabbits had guns, Elmer would hunt ducks.

If rabbits had guns, Elmer and Bugs would end up in one big gunfight because Elmer's swollen, flag waving, national anthem humming, "gun ownership is a right" sign holding head wouldn't be able to produce the thought to swallow his pride and go home.

Yeah, yeah. What you don't seem to notice here is that I'm not jumping in saying that more guns = problem solved. I was just pointing out that brisk was making a rather broad generalization and that most Americans don't run around with sixguns blazing. We're not all Homer Simpson.

Jesus, you people watch too many movies. Look, the vast majority of American gun owners aren't trigger-happy caricatures that walk around bristling with weaponry just waiting for an excuse to blast somebody. You Euros just can't seem to wrap your heads around the cultural difference between us that lets Americans own guns without feeling like we're doing so because we fear violence.
Only three US states prohibit openly carrying handguns. Three. What you don't see in the news is reports of people in the 47 states that allow it blasting away at each other over nothing.

You folks don't like guns. Some Americans do, and that doesn't mean that every one of us will shoot you if our order at McDonalds is wrong. Deal with it.

The episode was actually extremely funny. The Dutch amongst us (and PuFF) will likely shit themselves laughing at how "accurate" it is and "IT'S FUNNY 'CAUSE IT'S TRUE".
