Post by Dr_Watson »

do you get a feeling of irony as you're writing "Thief" or "Stolen" on a burned disc with a sharpie?

No, I just give a mental finger to the fucks who think charging $50 for a game or $20 for a CD is smart.

No but everytime I write a cheque for an album I already bought in a flawed format that lasted only 3 years I do.
If its all about the rights why am I paying for it again?
Are they not doing the same thing as file copying when they had me the same product and CHARGE me again with no rebate?

Yeah, I’m sure the loss of revenue from people stealing their work has nothing to with the rising price of games over the last few years.

I've been paying ~$50 for games for years now. Payed $54 I believe for Hexen in 95.

yeah, i think Quake cost me $45, and i remember phantasmagoria being $60.
i think the cheapest "current" retail game i've ever purchased was X-Com, and that was > $30, ~10 years ago... and it was only 3 floppies and a book.

if you adjust for inflation, video game prices havn't changed at all.

I smile and think I just saved £25 on an overpriced piece of 1s and 0s.

I did buy Quake 3, however.

hmmm, you could be closer to the truth, but I would have to believe that there is some artificial inflation in the price of games due to the fact that the developers know they are going to loose a certain amount to theft. If they are going to continue to be successful they are going to have to take that into account in some way.

How are they losing revenue? Your average pirate would just go without the title if they were unable to pirate it.

I don't pay that much for DVDs either. I wait until they go down in price. I think they are overpriced as well.

BINGO! Give this man a cookie.

Game devs are like music companies in that they can see past their own greed to realize the massive extra exposure they're getting is doing WONDERS for their legit sales.

Most peeps, if they like a game will buy it to avoid having to deal with the de-activation upon updating of cracked games and such. And now that you need unique keys to play online, games worth playing with flourish, and games that suck will die.

Course... Like record companies, they can't admit when they made a shit product that's not worth the CD it was stamped onto.

Not everyone obviously. But most of the great unwashed are more than happy to do it.
:D. It requires effort to go to the shop to get a DVD; or about 5 clicks :p

Actually, I really don't pirate much. I usually just wait till whatever I want goes down in price a bit. Can't even remember the last time I opened a P2P program. I don't use bittorrent for anything. I have downloaded a few leaked preview vids recently.
