Picked up God of War...

Post by tnf »

...played it for a few minutes on the demo machine at the video store and decided to buy it.

It kicks ass. And here I was thinking my PS2 was nothing more than a decorative piece next to the TV.

Just beat the first boss-type creature, and there is a cool twist to the combat. The combos are great, the fluidity reminds me of the first time I got the flail in Ninja Gaiden and spent an hour just practicing combos with it because the thing looked so good.

The game received two 10's and a 9.5 in Electronic Gaming Monthly, and although I don't generally let their reviews talk me into buying a game, anything that scores a 10 is generally a safe bet.

Oh, btw, people that asked about Scrapland. It's not bad, but not good either. Graphics, in my opinion, are a bit too "busy." The huge city you can fly around in is impressive at first, but, like GTA, much of it is just eye candy...no real interaction with the buildings other than flying by most of them.
I didn't have a manual for the game, and that is one game where I think it would have been useful to get me started.
From the 3 hours I put into it, I would give Scrapland about a 7/10.

Too many problems to make it a game I'd buy, but enough good things to make it worth a rental...

Thanks for the update. :icon14: Too bad about scrapland, but I'm sure I'll rent it sometime anyway.

I was planning on picking up Devil May Cry 3, but after seeing recommendations for God of War, I'm reconsidering. How's the gameplay, is it like Prince of Persia?

Much better...similar in the camera aspects, etc...you can't run along walls, but man, the combos are incredible. Pulling off midair stuff. Kickass weapon. Incredible graphics and, so far, no fps problems during the game. I usually say "man, I wish this game was out on the Xbox so I could play it with better graphics" (ignoring games that are also available on the PC, obviously), but in this case I have no complaints. The game is just fun to play, period.

Can't say anything about replayability yet.,

It has some of the best CGI I've seen on the PS2. And topless women.

That should be enough to sell an extra million or so copies.

Probably 60-70% of the ones I play. If I buy them, I finish them....rentals are a different story. I have blockbuster's game pass thing, so I can finish a lot of rentals that way.

I'm pretty busy right now with coaching and work - we are prepping our students for a big test as part of GWB's No Child Left Behind bullshit - so my time for gaming is actually pretty limited to weekends and a maybe 30 minutes to an hour every other weekday.

I would have stuck with Scrapland, but with my limited gaming time right now I want a game that gets me interested and engaged right of the bat, without having to spend a lot of time waiting for the real story to develop - as I think is the case with Scrapland. I will probably finish it someday - renting it again. My goal is to finish God of War and then move on to Chaos Theory - but I probably won't have it finished by then, which will mean I will be working on two games simultaneously...

And I won't be finishing Brothers in Arms anytime soon...not when an alternative as fun as this is available.

Not likely to find it too cheap 2nd hand right away. I've been playing for about 4 straight hours now and this game is quality from top to bottom so far.

You can do a lot of button mashing if you want, but the real fun is working the combos while fighting.

But yea, I can understand not wanting to drop 49.99 on a game.

Are you saving for the logitech GT4 wheel too? I tried the whole setup at Best Buy the other day....it was the first driving wheel I ever used that actually helped me control the car.

If nothing else, rent God of War. It is supposed to be a shorter game, so you could probably finish it with a rental.

nah... i can't spend that kinda money... and i'm already really used to the dualshock.
heh, and i already have one of the best wheel setups on the market for the pc that i'm thinking about selling... the logitech pales in comparison.
and i think the wheel i have does work on the ps2, (i know it works on the PSX, N64, GC, Dreamcast, N64 etc... has an ingenious 'cardrige system' that lets it hook to multiple systems) it just doesn't get force feedback; since logitech has an exclusive deal with sony, that their wheel is the only one that gets forces from GT3 & 4

Let me scan the EGM review on it. It's game of the month, by the way.

Both, and covered with see-through fabric. Developers probably figured they could sell a few hundred thousand more copies for that reason. There is a mini-game that involves a threesome...you have to push buttons, move the control sticks, etc., in the right order...but all the action takes place right off camera.
