Not just Americans, the whole world has a hard time grasping that concept. Might have something to do with the fact that we think of the UK as one country, not a whole bunch of them. With England as the most important one.seremtan wrote:it's Britain, not England. England is to Britain what Massachusetts is to the US. why do americans have such a hard time grasping this simple fact?
I tried to explain to a drunken Welshie once that most people don't see Wales as a country but as a province of England - and he suddenly became all upset and bitter.

So what exactly is it you want out of a deity? Would you want it to save people from harm? How about save people from themselves? Maybe you'd like that deity to fly around in a cape and tights 24/7 too? The point is that whether or not you believe in a god we all have free will and that includes the ability to make wrong choices as well as right ones.Nightshade wrote:Sorry, not buying it. When you talk about free will you forget about God's plan. You can't have both.Tormentius wrote:So what exactly is it you want out of a deity? Would you want it to save people from harm? If God had a plan then his plan has been fucked up by a bunch of self-serving idiots who want God to change His plan to accomodate the desires of an in-bred hick named Bubba. In other words, humanity's free will has shit all over any plans God had made.
Or...conversely....perhaps torturing the shallow souls on this planet with war, murder, cancer and genital warts was his plan all along?

LOL at people who bash the US in general.
If China ever becomes the dominant world power, you stupid fucking pricks will choke on the fucking humility. Only no one will probably know it. Communication bridges such as this place surely wouldn't exist.
We saved yer asses in dubya dubya two....so we aint gonna save em agin unless yer suckin Uncle Sam's peepee.

Lets look at Assaults (per capita)
USA: 7.5 per 1000
UK: 7.4 per 1000
Canada: 7.1 per 1000
Although I think a much better indicator of fundamental "wrongness" with a society is the suicide rate. The numbers
come out for the middle-aged group of 45-54 years old to
be per 100,000
Germany: 28.8
France: 28.4
Switzerland: 27.8
Sweden: 23
Canada: 18.5
Australia: 14.5
United States: 14.3
Netherlands: 12.7
So, your chance of getting murdered in the USA is greater
than in say Canada or Germany, but your chance of realizing
your entire life is pathetic and that that pretty much you are
a complete loser is much higher in Canada and Germany and
France and Switzerland...
=> I agree with Wabbit in that the USA is not significantly
worse as a society than the rest of the Western World. It
just depends on which statistics you want to focus on.

S@M wrote:here's an interesting website, it puts usa at #25 for murders on a per capita basis
http://www.nationmaster.com/country/us- ... /cri-crime
it also puts
france 40
Aust 43
Canada 44
UK 46
in terms of totals, usa has the highest levels of crime, but on a per capita basis ranks lower, however is still higher than most "similar" countries
edit: USA is ranked 168th for population density - 29.77 people per square kilometer...

It always depends on which statistics you focus on.
People just like to look at one set of statistics, and view it as a microcosm of their perception of said society. Nothing new in that.
Why take a bizarre topic about a nutjob who decided to kill some young girls execution style (a rare occurrence, whatever you might think), and then throw in school shootings and every other problem you have with said country, and try to lump them together to form the basis/rationalization for a generalization you already had?
Why, to troll of course.
Either that, or to show off your prejudice.
edit: sorry, couldn't resist posting in this age-old argument any longer.

I challenge anyone on this board to live in Denmark for two weeks just to see the difference.
This is a country with a capital city of roughly 1.4 million people with the rest of them scattered around in towns and farms. There is nothing fundamentaly different about them from any North American, German, Brit or drunken Irishman. They drink more beer more often (and are drunk more often) than any country I know. They pay extremely high taxes. In relative terms they are fairly crowded. And yet there is almost ZERO crime in this country. Sure...lots of bikes get stolen and maybe one or two people will be murdered each year...but take that and compare it to a relatively same sized city/demographic.
Copenhagen has been rated (yes I know in shitty polls) as having the "happiest people in the world"...whatever that means. But I'll tell you this....every single person that comes to this country is immediately struck by how relaxed and friendly people are. You'll hardly ever hear someone yelling out their window at someone cause they cut them off in traffic. You'll never hear anyone bitch about you bumping into them...as "personal space" isn't really a big issue here. (and with the gorgeous women everywhere why would any guy not want them to bump into him)
I grew up in Canada. I practically lived the states. I've lived in Germany. Out of all of them....the citizenry (to a person) is the same wherever you go in terms of personality, wishes, hopes and dreams. The difference is in the attitudes of the citizens towards their fellow citizens. Hell...even Canadians notice the different social attitudes of Americans being different than Canadians. In fact...we pride ourselves on being different to Americans in that regard. Compared to Canada and especially America...Denmark is simply a welcoming place to be.
To me...that is real freedom.
Take your stats and "Amuricuh is teh best" bullshit and stuff it up your asses. You don't need them to realize there are much better places to live than the US of Golly Good 'Ol A.
And to any yanks who simply can't comprehend this I really feel sorry for you. America isn't the "land of the free". It's the "land of the free market". And within it you'll notice attitudes are different than most other places who don't share your ideals.
I have no idea why Americans kill each other off in such spectacular dispays...but looking at the true barometer of democracy - respect for your fellow man and his opinions - is a good place to start. And yes America...you are disrepectful to everyone...especially each other.

Appreciate the insight. Demographics are vastly different from the US, for one thing, which may add to a better overall community coalescence:GONNAFISTYA wrote:I challenge anyone on this board to live in Denmark for two weeks just to see the difference.
