Apple has mentioned over and over that developers need to get on the ball with their intel binaries, but Apple cannot control this. If developers do things properly, the machines do run at the speed increases posted by apple. If the developers fuck around and dont optimize their code, the software will run slowly. Sure Apple will round up when advertising their new product, but the fact is this new platform/architecture combination will take time before the speeds are up to par. Apple just advertised that "par", which is accurate and true.
I guess it's just that most people assumed all the software will run faster.
yes. when you're told that the hardware is XX times faster than before, that's exactly what most people assume.
But that's not what's being advertised:
The Intel Core Duo and a whole new architecture give MacBook Pro up to four times the horsepower of PowerBook G4
They advertise "up to" 4x faster, but folks are too hasty to read it, right there next to the "4X" icon. http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

Additionally they post benchmarks from 1.7x to ~4x faster depending on the application, and that's just for intel-native applications. Beyond that they go to lengths to explain the rosetta emulation technology.

Quark's a PoS on the PC too, no surprise there.

Just one of those things folks put up with because of its popularity/marketshare?

IMO, it's one of those things like Groupwise that people who are afraid of change still use.

The software is shit, the support is shit and the licensing is shit. I haven't been able to see a single reason to continue using Quark in our business, but it's the "we've always done it that way" people who refuse to let the company do something different.

i'm pretty sure i did not hear Job's say "up to" in his recent keynote address, but i understand what you're saying as far as the ads and commercials go.

jobs pointed out and i quote ..

" obviously there are other bottlenecks in the system such as bus speed and so on that affect these numbers.."

I cant remember word for word what all he said, but he basicly said that it was processer increase, not over all system increase. Watch the expo again in http://www.apple.com

I cant rememebr what else he said after what i quoted bro, hence why i ended my quote where i did.

The reality is this. Jobs didnt lie about the speed of the new imacs, just was a lil vieled on what they meant, but thats just normal marketing technique, not to mention you cant bust too many balls cause jobs said plainly that the 2x was not real world apps, but were specific benchmarks to showcase the increase of power from the chips themselves, he didnt lie at all, just hyped up the processor increase alot. The truth is that the imacs are 2x + faster then the g5's but only in tests like floating point. While this doesnt translate to a real world boost of 2-3x in current application use, what this does do is provide a solid core or foundation to expand off of. If your a professional or strapped for cash then no i wouldnt say in its current incarnation that a imac is for you ( yea im a mac fanboi too ) but what it shows to me personaly is that the future is looking good for mac. My dad put it a good put it a good way last night when we were talking about this, he basicly said that this did one thing if nothing else, it establishes mac as a predator and shows the world that they arent down and out and fading, but fighting and climbing. No im not sayin they will over throw MS 3 months from now, but i definetly see a increase in market share coming and for good reason. OSX is great, it just has lacked the hardware to push it and now it has that. I truly think that in a few months once things get optimized on the mac software front and when someone figures out how to put XP on it, you will see sales increase noticably.

Like i said, its not about mac running the world, its about them coming up and being a player. I firmly believe they are accomplishing that task.

i wasn't falling into the hype with his keynote nor do i with billy boi's keynotes.

and i agree, i'm happy to see this new agreement with Apple and Intel, the more competition the merrier, which is why i'm tossing around the idea of getting an ibook whenever they decide to launch them with intel hardware.

i know that they HAVE Macbook Pro's, but was hoping they'd shoehorn some Intel goodness into the ibooks - i don't need a desktop replacement, just something portable.

It will happen JuggerNaut...patience, patience.

They're going to transition all their computers to Intel by the year's end, so things should look up for your ambitions.

It will probably happen after the powerbooks have a chance to ship and stabilize... Macbook.. what a dumb name. It doens't exactly inspire fear or respect like 'Power'

mactel...:olo:

they seem to be referred to predominantly as "Intel Macs" rather than "mactel"....that name is even worse than "MacBook".
