wasn't really my choice - my friends insisted i went. If i'd known that pain was the only thing i'd need to worry about, and that it'd subside in a few hours, i'd've gladly stayed. I was looking forward to a good evening.

and unless you're some sort of monk, i don't think you'd be able to get completely used to this sort of sting.

and you don't strike me as having monk-like qualities.

4days wrote:they're classed as deadly largely because of where they live. if you get bitten by a bullet ant and there's nobody there to carry you out of the jungle, you'll fall down where you stand - then be bitten by more bullet ants (apparently a few bites or a bite in the wrong place can kill you), or you'll get attacked/eaten by other stuff wandering around the forest floor.
heh, that reminds me... i had a friend in high school who went down to costa rica for a vacation. while hiking around in the woods he decided he would commune with nature by hiking completely naked. wise lad that he was, he realised that mosquitos would be a serious problem (frankly, i can recall having to cover my mouth to breath at times when i was there for fear of inhaling a bunch of them). so he sprayed his deep-fucking-jungle bug repellent over his entire body and set off. well, shortly into his hike he starts vomitting, but assumes it's from the alcohol and continues. a couple hours later some other tourists find him unconscious - and still quite naked - on a trail in the rain forest suffering from acute poisoning from the bug spray. they were kind enough to carry him back to get medical attention.
lesson: if you're going to poison yourself and pass out in the rain forest, make sure you've poisoned yourself with bug spray so you're not all itchy when you wake up in the hospital :14:

3.0 Paper wasp: Caustic & burning. Distinctly bitter aftertaste. Like spilling a beaker of Hydrochloric acid on a paper cut.
I was stung by these three times in rapid succession once. I never knew what they were called - I've always called them hornets - but man do they hurt:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_wasp

We had moved into a new house (I was 14 or 15), and had dense woods on the back half of the property. My dad and I were cutting a trail to the back of the property, where we later made a big clearing for a toolshed/workshop, our trampoline, a ropeswing, etc.

About 30 yards into the woods, we came across a massive roll of old fence that had been taken down. We didn't think anything of it (more than a pain in the ass to deal with) and started moving it out of the way to get rid of it.

It turns out there was a massive hornets' (paper wasps') nest in it. After we wrangled the thing a little, hordes of them started swarming out of it and we had to take off running (never knew my dad COULD run up until that point, hehe). I don't think he got stung at all, but I got hit pretty hard, 3 times.

I think all three stings were by the same hornet. I felt the first one right on the back of my shoulder, so I started slapping at it as I ran. After a couple of slaps I thought it was gone, but when I pulled my hand back it was latched onto my first finger and started fucking drilling me. I don't know if any of you have ever tried to SHAKE one of those things off, but it simply doesn't work. I was shaking and slinging my hand like I was having a seizure, but that bastard might as well have had squid hooks on his legs, because there was no getting it off. So finally I used my other hand and slapped the bastard off of me (the whole time sprinting toward the house), and no sooner than I got it off the fucker landed right on top of my head and dug in again. I slapped it off pretty quickly this time, but not before it was able to dig in for a couple of seconds.

It's pretty hard to describe the feeling, but I would say it was like someone took a large syringe full of Icy Hot, and slammed the plunger into me with a hammer, all in three different places and all in a span of about 15- 20 seconds. The ones in my shoulder and head actually made me stagger and lose my balance. The welts were massive, and they didn't stop hurting completely for 3 or 4 days I'd say. I've never been allergic to any wasp or bee stings, so I never went to see a doctor or anything.

Anytime I see these bastards, I take great delight in spraying them with a stream of WD-40, Wasp Killer, or anything else deadly I have laying around.

Don't wasps die once they sting? Or is that just Honey bees?

I was never sure if it was the same one that got me all three times, or multiple ones, but the way it happened made it seem like the same one kept coming back.

according to the wiki article there, paper wasps represent a pretty broad group of different wasp species in the genus Polistes. lots of big wasps (like these bitches) get called hornets though.

I'm more of a "creeped out by lobsters" kind of a guy. Another reason why I don't eat seafood.

Edit: that said, I like this little fella less: Image
that's 2 "little fuckers".
I'm pretty sure that's just one camel spider.

Yea, that's two. Two abdomens, two sets of legs, etc.

Still massive and freaky though. I would shit myself if I found one of those, say, in my tent.

It seems they're not as big as I thought they were. That picture is misleading:

i'm not gonna pretend that the pain i went through even comes close to what pissing stones is like :p

luckily no tissue death. My foot was tender and swollen (more tender than swollen) a few minutes after getting stung, but the class of venoms here is different from of some snakes and spiders.

it was just

fucking

PAINFUL.

i just looked over the hospital report - in the disease section it was classified as "Bitten or crushed by reptile"

and further description:

"came into contact with other arthropods"

hehe
