Watched dirty jobs on discovery tonite, and mike rowe was in the pet groomers office. They where washing some dogs and they did the practice mentioned above, as the lady put it to 'clean the area of posinous excrement' or something

Unfortunately, we've had to do it a couple of times. If your dog scoots his ass on the carpet, he more than likely needs to have this done. Go to the vet one time and have them show you how to do it properly.

Dog's anal glads are why they sniff each other's butts. Each dog has a unique smell. If those glads get clogged up, it is supposedly uncomfortable at best and possible painful. Unless your dog has a really bad diet, once or twice a year is probably sufficient. I think some breeds are worse than others for this problem as well.
