Yeah, I know this is the 700th bittorrent thread...but still.
I get shitty download speeds with bittorrent for somre reason. I also notice that the # of peers goes down over time. I might have only 5 after a few hours, but upon reconnecting, get 12. I use Bit Tornado because it's...simple. I've opened certain ports on mah router two.
What to do? TELL ME !!! RARARAW!

If you are forwarding the correct ports and are having no issues with your internet connection, then I am sorry to say there is nothing you can do.
Chances are the people seeding the file are not as dedicated to sharing as you are downloading.

I always get 100+kb/sec on bitcomet, 100 being the minimum i have gotten (iso images, rars, etc)
You need to make sure your listen port is forwarded on your router, I have tested this and probably will increase the speed 10x if not more.

The listen ports are forwarded?
Here is what I've got:
(Linksys Router, Forward Tab)
6881-6999 TCP/UDP 192.168.1.xxx (xxx let's me input the values of the respective PCs)
I almost always only get between 10 and 18 kb/s on every torrent I've downloaded over extended periods of time. What is your upload if you dl at 100 kb/s?
I heard there is some bittorrent client that is better at detecting available connections than others. Any thing I should know about when configuring Azureus?

do the nat test in azureus. also, dont max out your upload (thats a given)
i think with the latest release of azureus you dont need to open 23423901 ports anymore, just 6881. could be wrong though

Azureus, and make sure you cap your upload to a reasonable amount for your connection. You'll thank us shortly.
edit: And yes, do the NAT test.

Go to Tools > Options > Connection
Change Incoming TCP listen port field to something else, ie. 16881

Is there a program similar to Azureus with the same option to detect NAT settings and change listen ports that doesn't require Java?

What's the beef with Java?
Most people complaining about Java performance problems with Azureus were using the MS built in implementation of Java or not the latest version.
