Blast from the Past - Q3/QL anniversary reqapartament "rat" map

Post by req »

Officially I finished working on the release of the "reqapartament" map. Description, links, and details can be found a few posts below :)

https://www.quake3world.com/forum/viewt ... 3#p1079963

Hi! After more than 15 years since I made my last map for Quake 3 Arena (reqtourney1), I’m symbolically coming back to create one more project 🙂
'reqapartament' – still a working title – is my personal retrospective and an attempt to recreate an old apartment, filled with memories from the past. Two rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a few interesting 'secret areas' – all of this is sure to bring players a lot of joy and nostalgia 🙂

The map is primarily designed for 1v1/FFA gameplay, but I’ve also planned a CTF edition for a later release.
Launch scheduled for the first quarter of 2025!
Previously, I published similar works under the nickname 'Requiem.' If you’re curious, the previous reality-based maps had the file names: reqbathroom and reqkitchen, you can download them from lvlworld :)

The map was reflected in great detail, and that's because I have a ton of photos from my childhood, and later I also took a lot of pictures myself with my first digital camera :D Plus, of course, there are a lot of positive memories. Here are some reference photos:

In addition, I have a technical floor plan of the apartment with dimensions, and detailed measurements of the apartment elements are from a study on OWT-67 panel blocks in the polish book "Housing Construction Systems" by Eugeniusz Pliszka. For furniture dimensions I don’t know, I estimate them by analyzing photos in Photoshop, and I got the measurements for BlackRedWhite furniture directly from their customer service, as they sent me PDFs with assembly instructions :D I adopted a scale where 1 cm in reality corresponds to 3 units in Radiance.

That looks very nice man.
Those interiors with the stereo setup and all.

Thank You, Hipshot! <3

December update!

I've practically finished the entire map, except for one last room – the one with the computer :) The map will be available for playing in 1v1, TDM, and FFA modes. Each mode will have a different item placement and item respawn times. In 1v1 and TDM modes, none of the 'secret areas' will be accessible for exploration, ensuring that the map is focused solely on providing a good match experience in an environment filled with (polish, but not only) nostalgia from the era. In FFA, as you’d expect – total chaos with most of the power-ups hidden throughout the map :D

I think it looks very good!

You should post this over at q3lvl, there's more people there and they just added an image tag to the forums too =D

Hipshot: do you mean the forum on lvlworld? :) Or somewhere else? There's practically no one anywhere, even on our biggest polish site, quake.net.pl :(

This is the premiere of "Blast from the Past" Quake 3 / Live map :)

25 years since the release of Quake III Arena game by id Software, 23 years since I started creating maps for this game, and 20 years since my last reality-based rat map, "reqkitchen", I'm here with something entirely new! "Blast from the Past", also as "reqapartament", is my nostalgic journey back to the days of youth, my first computer, gaming, and hobbies.

"Blast from the Past" is a personal retrospection and an attempt to recreate the old apartment where I grew up in Poland. I wanted to once again feel the atmosphere of that time, so I filled it with many memories from the past. You'll find interesting stuff from the 1990s and 2000s (and beyond) that might evoke nice memories for you as well. But above all, the focus is on the joy of gameplay.

To ensure this, I prioritized maintaining a scale and arrangement of objects that would allow for dynamic and smooth gameplay, making it enjoyable for everyone. Whether in 1-on-1 matches, team games, or classic FFA mayhem, the map is sure to provide lots of entertainment!

Unlike my previous rat maps "reqbath" and "reqkitchen", the size of this map is smaller, with locations made more accessible for all players and bots. The challenge was to preserve the accurate dimensions of the interior, as well as the furniture and objects within it. I adopted a scale where 1 centimeter in real life equals three units in Radiant.

Creating this map brought me immense joy and serves as my nostalgic return to mapping after 16 years. I hope you'll have just as much fun playing it alone or with friends. :)

Gameplay:
The map is designed for gameplay using promode physics. For an optimal experience, for Quake 3 I recommend using the popular mod OSP 1.03a with promode enabled, and as an interesting alternative, the modern rendering engine Quake3e. For Quake Live I recommend download "More Gametypes" addon for pro-oriented gameplay (Pro Quake Live - PQL) (links provided in the "Requirements" section of my website: letsgoretro.pl/quake). The map can also be played on vanilla Q3/QL, but the gameplay feels more "sluggish". Item placement varies slightly depending on the selected game mode (1v1, team, free for all).

Secrets:
As is tradition, the map features secret locations with various bonuses. These are only accessible in FFA (Free for all) mode. There are also a few "easter eggs". Take on the challenge and try to find them all! :D

Social Media:
If you record gameplay on this map for YT, etc., let me know at aberesewicz [at] gmail.com. I'll share it on my letsgoretro.pl socials :)

Just a beautiful map req
I have always enjoyed running about this style of map.

It took me a while to get my QL install up and running after a new PC but thanks to the assist (from a Discord request for help) I had a quick run about. I will explore further but I will add now, the detail is amazing and the variety of items spread thoughtfully about are so good in all respects.

You used the 'nostalgia' and that was what I felt moving about. I must try the Q3 version soon.

Thank you req for the effort here and I have made a note to myself, get back to lvlworld
Wow, my lvlworld login  still works.

One word then, nice.
