Install Win 10 beta, get Win 10 activated for free

Post by ToxicBug »

In case anyone hasn't seen this yet. A bit of controversy here, but I think that it's worth a try.

Microsoft Can't Decide If It's Giving Away Windows 10 For Free

I think basically if you're a home user, your preview version will be activated for free no matter what. This just doesn't work for businesses.

Anyway, installed it last night:

If you install the preview, do you have to reinstall once it actually comes out?

Nope. The preview was installed over my win7 x64 install thru Windows Update btw.

Neat.

So is this pretty much the final version? I think my current install is fucked up so I was just waiting around till 10 was out to reinstall. But if this is it I will do it now.

It looks like a dress rehearsal. You should definitely have a second PC available just in case something goes wrong. Last night I messed around with it quite a bit, in the end it booted to a black screen and I can't log in anymore. F8 safe mode menu is disabled by default :dork: so I made a bootable USB key with the preview ISO. Gonna try to fix it tonight.

My setup is pretty extreme, though. I'm having problems with the most recent (and only) Nvidia drivers available for Win10. G-Sync Surround is very flaky with the latest driver, I had this issue in Win7 and I had to roll back my nv drivers by two releases to get it stable.

Ah, that doesn't sound good. My win8.1 install wont let me play any video, crashes every player I try. I think I broke something going from a 680, 970 to a titanx with a little intel onboard mixed in between. It's a bit of a nuisance, but I can wait another month to reinstall a new OS.

Things haven't gone well indeed. Had to "refresh" my Win 10 install, basically I lost all the programs that were installed on my OS drive. Luckily all my games are on other drives, so I don't need to re-download them.

It's nice of Microsoft to upgrade my Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines to Windows 10 for free and notify me about this, but did they really have to put a windows icon in my taskbar tray that cannot be hidden or removed? :disgust:

It's not bothering me in the least. Plus I just hid it in the taskbar properties just to see if I could.

You need to calm down, you're out of control.
