Re: Russia in the Ukraine. Conspiracy or not?
love how people are still talking about the 'revolution' in Ukraine like it was overthrowing a dictatorship. Yanukovych was democratically elected, fuck-knuckles; you overthrew the guy you elected, thereby instantly voiding your membership of the democracy club - like those bell-ends in Egypt Being...

Re: Recommend me some games
Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough, but I'm only looking for games that aren't available for the PC. I've played almost all of the games MKJ listed, plus Deus Ex 3, etc. Anyway, I've heard some good things about Dark Souls before Mat mentioned it and was considering getting it. Definitely worth...

Recommend me some games
So long story short, I bought a PS3 last week, along with Tekken 6 and Gran Turismo 5. I've never owned a console before (aside from a SNES 15+ years ago), nor have I really played much on one apart from some time way back on a PS1. So I welcome recommendations for games that I've missed out on duri...

Ah, maybe I should've mentioned that I do on/off consulting for HFTs. That's market making (at large volumes) and probably quite different from what the average pension fund manager does. You inevitably end up with superfluous stock and what do you do with it? It obviously depends on what the stock...

While I think it's stupid, as I understand it they only cut a single scene where two characters get a little bit intimate with each other. I don't think it's a huge loss for the movie. You picked a bad example. S&P 500 is a by-committee index and not necessarily neutral in the stocks they pick (and companies on the list profit from the 'follower funds' effect). Rather, look at the US stock market as a whole and tell me what ROI to expect. Ah, but selling at a loss is not real...

I'm basing that 7 - 7.5% on the general movement of the major markets in the last 30 years. Tell me I'm wrong, I dare you, and I will slap you senseless with interminable graphs and statistics. Last year there were news that the Yale's University Endowment Fund had made close to 9% p.a. average annual return for the past decade, which includes a big crisis. It's a fair comparison in terms of the asset allocation we are talking about, even though I think a young person should be able to tak...

Offset your long term returns against inflation and taxes and I don't think your ROI is going to be much better than 5%, not with a little-bit-of-everything portfolio. Now replace 'ghetto' with 'bull market' and 'real estate' with 'stock'. a) A home mortgage will not earn you the same as stocks in ...

Re: Investments: Where do you put your money and how's it doing?
Oh, and I wanted to correct some horrible misconceptions in this thread: "I respectfully disagree. A mortgage isn't free: 5% interest over a 30 year period is a lot of money." A mortgage will end up costing you almost twice your house over 30 years, yes. But say you have 100,000$, which yo...

Here's what I do: Invest all my net worth into local stocks and loan it out to local companies. Here's what I suggest, as someone that is soon to receive his master's degree in Finance and has held different financial specialist positions: Diversify your net worth between real-estate, bonds, stocks,...

I programmed a game of pool when I had my Excel VBA course, might want to try that for something a bit different

Re: PC upgrade time
Purchasing Win7 atm is not really an option at the moment, perhaps in a month or two. Though I'm still reluctant to shell out 100€ for what still seems like a fairly trivial update. As far as I know, XP produces about the same performance as Win7. What sort of features am I missing by not having DX1...

Gigabyte GTX460 SE 1GB
700W PSU
All for 597€
Hopefully picking it up tonight

Yeah, a 470 is about 80$ more expensive than a 1GB 460 over here. That's 10% of my entire budget :Pobsidian wrote:

Re: PC upgrade time
470 seems kind of iffy. Even if I pick the cheapest 470 from the cheapest vendor, I'm going way over my budget, apparently a 470 requires a 550W PSU minimum. Are the gains really worth going noticeably over budget? Should I perhaps think about getting a GTX460 and switching the GPU and PSU some time...

PC upgrade time
Atm I have a system that manages to run most games on low res, but it's time to upgrade. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea of the hardware going around these days, what bottlenecks what, etc. I have a budget of at maximum 600EUR, but since prices are way higher here than in the US/UK, I proba...

Need advice on connecting laptop and TV.
So basically I used an S-video to SCART connection with my last TV which died a few days ago (and it had only SCART inputs :P ) and I'm hopelessly out of date with the current possibilities of connecting stuff: My laptop has: a VGA out, an S-video out (and USB ports) (no HDMI out :/) My TV has: HDMI...

They nerf Battlecruisers, which are insanely expensive and slow units, but do nothing about void rays.
