I often wondered about this Yiddish term.
I don't know the etymology, so I'm going to ramble a bit now =>

Usually we assume the male version of things are default.
Like "male" and "man", and then add prefixes to describe the female versions, like "fe-male" and "wo-man".

But I think those jews were on to something;
All fetuses start out female, with XX chromosomes, and then by chance can turn into an XY male.

So maybe the female versions of things are indeed default.
