Quote:
Bethesda will re-release seven-year-old first-person shooter Quake 4 on Xbox 360 in June, it's announced.

In the US the game launches on Tuesday, 19th June with a new $19.99 price point. In Europe, it launches on PC and Xbox 360 (as has been pointed out, the game's already available here on Steam for £15. We're checking with Bethesda now to find out what its new PC re-release means).

"If you didn't pick up an Xbox 360 at launch, it's possible you might have missed out on one of the system's best launch titles, Quake 4," Bethesda said.

"With it becoming harder and harder to find a new copy of the game, we're happy to announce we're re-releasing it at a low price of $19.99."

Quake 4, developed by Raven Software in collaboration with series creator id Software for publisher Activision, launched in 2005 on PC then, later, on the then new home console Xbox 360. It was released on Steam in 2011.

One question: why?

Nope, he disappeared. He left Raven a while ago, I think he works for LucasArts now.

I know that pjw and wviperw still work at Raven.

I still have Quake 4 installed. Just loaded it, looked in settings and remembered that there's no 1920 x 1080 res, it goes up to 1600 x 1200. I wonder if they'll update that if it's being re-released for PC. I thought it was a good game and likewise, so was Doom 3. But I'm easily pleased.

So basically it'll look and play like shit but with a higher resolution. Quake 4 was just a massive waste of time, like selling makeup in England.

Or you could, you know, use r_customHeight, r_customWidth, and r_mode -1...

But yeah, sure...

What if they gave it Steamworks and full Workshop support? Q4 MP via Steam list friends with custom models and maps again? Gimmie.

Ofc it won't be. But one can dream...

Q4 MP wasn't very good though, let's face it. Strafejumping was terrible. The community response was pretty much the reason Q3 was resurrected in QL.
Well I think that was the main reason anyway.

Yeah, the fan base anticipated a solid multiplayer game, and they delivered a reasonable singleplayer with a tacked on multiplayer bit. In the end, there was never enough momentum in the modding community to drag the game up to an acceptable multiplayer standard (e.g. bolt on OSP, RA, CPMA and release a boatload of AAA maps).

In fairness, they never billed it as being anything other than that, but producing a sequel that's a completely different game type than the previous incarnation of the series is a bit of a stuff-up.

It only worked for Q2->Q3 switching from single to multi because that's the way the community had developed over time and where the focus shifted. By contrast nobody from the Q3 fan base was screaming out for a single-player-only sequel.

yeah, on what planet was Q3 ever deemed as a single player game?

So they take one of the most successful fps multiplayer IP's known to man and sequel out this garbage... Honestly, that's republican grade retardation.

Q4 got what it deserved...

That is a bit odd logic, because none of the Quake titles are in any way related to each other, neither in gameplay nor story. So the oddest thing about Q4 is actually that it has continuity from Q2.

Q2 was an all round awesome game. Its intro cinematic is still one of the best ever made.

Intro cinematic is epic! Even by today's standard, not many other games have anything close to Q2 intro.

Q4's SP was impressive from a developer's point of view (very detailed environments, great story progression etc.) but was extremely unplayable. It was so anally slow as fuck that I ended up just skipping to later levels out of boredom. And Q4's custom community failed since it made modding far more time consuming and complex.

Q2's SP is fast and to-the-point - how Quake should be. The monsters were seriously retarded but it was still good fun, the maps were well thought out and the mission objectives were varied and interesting. MP was better too - the physics were great, interesting weapons and items, etc..
