Best Linux distro?

Ok, I'm going to use Ubuntu, but this whole Dual-Boot thing has me confused.

What would be a good partitioning software to use?

No, all distros come with at least one precompiled kernel that gets installed. You may need to compile a new one if the precompiled one doesn't support all your hardware or you want a customised kernel.

If you have everything working under the live cd then there's probably no need to compile.

Alright, I've gotten everything set up and running, using Ubuntu (even got around a pesky resolution fuckup). The dual-boot thing didn't work out, so I just went and reformatted.

If you do try gentoo, start out with a stage 3 install w/ genkernel. After you become more familiar with the distro (and/or linux in general) move to a stage 2. A stage 1 install is for people with lots of time on their hands and lots of patience, but you can pare down a gentoo install to squeeze every ounce of performance out of a machine.

With gentoo, you compile most packages to your own tastes. You can still use binaries, but most packages compile and install in a fairly quick manner to begin with, so it really doesn't bother me.

Gentoo will take longer to get a good base down, but after you've done that, it's easy as pie to maintain and it doesn't have a lot of the glut that some other distros have.

I've tried Debian and Redhat as well, but I've really taken to gentoo. Emerge > apt > rpm in my book.

gentoo's great. only been using it for a while - but it's getting rare that i need to boot into windows during the day (haven't looked at wine at all yet).

i know next to fuckall about linux, but the docs on the gentoo site are clear enough to get you through an install - and searching the forums turns up info to get over any stumbling blocks.

Either you're a moron, or you don't know how to read. I am saying that the process to get any game running in Linux is the same. Wether or not a game has poor performance is outside the scope of the comment.

If you re-read the earlier posts, you'd also see that I was refering to Ubuntu in respect to other distributions. Your post misled me to think you were singling out Ubuntu vs others.

You do realise that the transgaming verison of wine is suited more for games, and that OpenGL should run at almost the same speed but DirectX is lacking because the engine has to convert the DirectX calls into OpenGL calls instead.

Once its to the point that i can put my disk in, install, and run the exe and be able to run the game in all its glory without being penalized for it do to shitty "emulation"

Good. But with that analogy you could say any program which reads txt files emulate each other.

Just because Wine is capable of executing Windows code it does not emulate it per se.
