NVidia or ATI graphics = Much better than Intel graphics on laptops.

Of course, there are GOOD Nvidia and LESS GOOD Nvidia laptop chips.

The latest really good ones are the 260M, 270M, and 280M.

Most modern nVidia and ATI graphic cards will run 3ds Max without any problems. However, there will be a big difference between you running a 5000 poly model and a 5 million poly model with real-time lighting and a bunch of Reactor physics objects, etc. As Foo pointed out, that depends on the range of GOOD and LESS GOOD models.
