I agree, it's not a rule of choice, but the players who will be playing will be primarily of the NoGhost mod (which is 1.16).

Then the contest should be announced as that, don't you think?
Hmm...
It's a bit complicated, cause I'm sure this was a contest that spawned from the noGhost community, but now it's much more than that. Most level designers who enters this contest, can't be found on noGhosts forums, right?

Yes, but the person who is setting the contest up and acquiring the prizes calls the shots. If Maverick would broaden that particular rule it would attract many more mappers (and better maps). But his agenda is to make his mod more playable by having more maps made to cater to the restrictions of 1.16 so that he may benefit and make some money as well.

[09:31] <@Maverick|MSG> regardless, the rule to require the map to be compatible with 1.16n is dropped, mainly because
[09:31] <@Maverick|MSG> 1) I feel it unnecessarily complicates the competition, particularly to the point that it hinders development and new ideas
[09:32] <@Maverick|MSG> 2) 1.16n, as much as I love it and the population who play it, is an old version and the competition's goal is for new and exciting map creation. catering to old technology is counter-productive to that target.

Lovely. That makes this whole situation better. :) That was my least favorite rule because I felt that some mappers were restrained from doing their best. I'm happy to see that it's overturned.

Thanks for inquiring, guys.

i'd like to see a competition of the effects type. :D im in on this one btw. :D ty for hot comps to enter.

a comp for making like animated level prefabs would be neat.. been looking at this tidal wave move(6th or 7th move in the movie) in wizard101 lately thinking I can almost ream ache it in q3... a remake might involve some ream ache.. but it'd doable.. imagine walking up to the edge of the water and triggering a little player size tidal wave.. with wind and splash sound effects for when it crashes down carrying a damage trigger.. a shader train!

@Hipshot

Unfortunately, the prizes from Autodesk are only for participants who live in North America because of license issues - Maverick said there was no way to get around that.

Edit:

@ skinNCNmaster, I replied to your post at the competition forums :)

Btw: Is there any short form of your nick you feel comfortable with? :toothy:

Again a quick update:
Maverick wrote: I am finalizing the last sponsor right now and here is a (slightly edited) excerpt from their latest email:
We are attending Quakecon, likely with our partner company, and we thought it would be great to try and sync up the contest with the show. This could get you some extra exposure as well as tie in nicely. We will have a booth in the exhibition area and we would like to have the winning maps there for people to be able to play on with our system set-up. With this in mind, we could promote the contest in all the usual channels, plus let people know that attendees at Quakecon can come by our booth and try out the winning maps. Quakecon is taking place Aug 12-15 so, we would need the winning maps (tested) by Aug 6 latest. Given you want to run the contest for 10 weeks, you would need to launch early. What do you think?
So...In an effort to meet the competition finish time of August 6th I am tentatively scheduling the competition to start one week early, on May 25th, and end on August 3rd. This will still give everyone 10 weeks of development time since I don't want to eat into that, however I don't know if there will be enough time to get the judging done before QuakeCon occurs. I hope everyone agrees that this is acceptable given that this schedule change will guarantee every finished map getting some awesome exposure, regardless of how well it does in the competition.

If anyone has any problems with this change please reply as soon as you can so I can get back to the sponsor.

As long as this one seems to go over well, yes. I was speaking with Maverick about the results of the first one. This one should be a bit better, and hopefully the next one will surpass this one.
