Well, not literally.

See, I have problems to concentrate on school work. I go to enourmous lengths to procrastinate as much as I can, and I can never concentrate on a book for more than 30 minutes.

Now I've heard about such wonderful drugs such as Adderall, plain ol' Ritalin, and Modafinil which supposedly all help to overcome such 'lazyness'.

So my plan is to convince a doctor somehow that I have ADD or something, and take that stuff before and during exams.

Does anybody here have experiences? Good or bad?

Please, don't give me the "don't take drugs because you're lazy" talk, I know all about it. I also know the "don't smoke", "don't drink" and "don't smoke weed" talks. I've dealt with these drugs and came out fine.

Yeah take all the work out of concentration.

Let's take some drugs instead! Woohoo!

I don't see how this is any worse than steroid (ab)use.

Amphetamines don't really help you study, unless you're studying to be a gerbil.

I guess german efficiency isn't what it used to be.

Modafinil is prescribed off-label for ADHD in the US, it was originally intended for use in narcolepsy patients. Apparently you can use modafinil to remain awake and alert for up to 40 hours before the wakeful effects subside. It's pretty safe.

I wasn't planning on taking more than 20 mg a day (which, supposedly, is the dose ADD kids get).

I guess I'll just see a doctor and tell him that my allergy meds make me drowsy and try to get some modafinil.

Yeah, I can see how you got that prescription.

It probably worked in SOAPboy because his depression left him without energy and the will to concentrate on tasks. That's my guess....

Fish Oils. You can buy them in supplement form.

fish oil :)

about six months ago i started to eat loads of tinned fish like mackral and pilchards because it supposedly helps concentration and depression. It's done both (may just be a placebo; but i don't care - it works)

They feed it to school kids in pills.

paul erdos [air-dish], the most ingenious mathematician of the 20th century, was doing mathematics 18h a day for the last 10-20 years of his life (he became 77 i think).
however - he used caffeine and benzedrine, some sort of amphetamine, to maintain his level of skill.

You sure he wasn't mathematically inclined to begin with?

sure he was. he discovered negative numbers just by himself at the age of 5. and the the age of 18 he published an elemental (without the use of higher mathematics aka calculus) proof for the existance of a prime p , n<p<2n for every n. a problem that had allready been researched some hundred years and was only solved using very complex methods 10 years before his elemental proof.

he was just not working 18h before.

i recommend you to read his biography - it is really is a good book. it's called 'the man who loved only numbers'

I'll consider it. Thanks.

Splish, have you ever tried Yerba Mate?

coca tea's really nice as well, both a bit tricky to get outside s. america.

i used to know a bunch of students that took a lot of stimulants, some of which said it was to help them study - so, granted this opinion is based on watching people speed, rather than anything sciencey - but it seemed like stimulants were better for going over info you already know and pulling it together, rather than taking on new stuff.

No, although I've heard about some south east asian tea that's apparently still legal.

I'll try and look for the name.

eat well, sleep well, and stop watching so much tv/instant messaging/msgboarding

you need to train your attention to deal with higher temporal demands.

try meditation - 1000 times better than drugs.

Splish, Yerba Mate isn't illegal. It's all over the place here. We're not talking about those other South American drinks that distort your perception or dump strong stimulants into your system. Read the wiki.

a cursory google search gave me this:

http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/meditation/types.asp

http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/HQ/01070.html

Nah, it was something else. It started with a K... I think. Can't find it right now.
