There's loads of footage available from Heavy Rain. It looks absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately it's a PS3 exclusive. I hope they'll eventually release it on XBox360 as well.

Was it really necessary to make the player push a button to open the lid of the box? Quick time events need to die.

Let me break the news to you: Heavy Rain is, just like it's predecessor (Fahrenheit), one big quick time event.

Heavy Rain looks good... But the gameplay looks like utter toss... If I wanted to play a game hitting the right buttons and getting them wrong I'd play Geetur Hero...

Agreed, graphics and story line look good, but do I really want to play a game of QTE's strung together by pretty cut scenes? Might as well watch a movie and play with the buttons on the remote.

Well, I really enjoyed Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, and I think there were a few people here who also liked it. If this game is any way like that, it should be pretty decent.

Same here, I loved Fahrenheit for it's narrative. Gameplay was absolutely terrible on PC without gamepad but oh well.

i played it in london last weekend. it's really good.

and yes, it is effectively "click a button whenever it comes up on the screen" gameplay, but there are lots of different paths you can take and each game normally ends quite differently.

it kinda reminds me of those old choose your own adventure books i used to read as a kid. i thought it was awesome.

After running for what seems like hours, you find yourself in a room underneath the factory with no other doors. The mysterious figure pursuing you is getting closer, and you're running out of time. In the back corner high above you see a small rectangular window that might be just big enough to squeeze through. In the poor lighting you also spot a loose drainage grate on the floor in the center of the room.

What do you do?

1.) TRIANGLE

2.) SQUARE

3.) CIRCLE CIRCLE CIRCLE CIRCLE CIRCLE

Always good to judge a game before you've played it.

With who?
Is anyone here disputing the fact that Guitar Hero is nothing more than quicktime events where the only novelty is that you're doing it with a plastic guitar rather than a standard controller?

When I think of a quick time event, I think of a scripted series of events in an action game or RPG which is controlled solely by timing a button combination. There's no in-between, you either fail or succeed, and your skill at the rest of the game has no bearing on the outcome. Music games don't have any character control element where you're playing the role of someone on screen.

When I play an action game, I don't want to hit random buttons to climb a giant boss and stab him in the eye. I want to actually climb the boss and stab him in the eye. Shadow of the Colossus did it well, why can't God of War?

i can't tell exactly where on the color scale orange turns to red, but i can tell the difference between orange and red.

quick time events are okay here and there (e.g. RE4/5), but any more than that sucks.

Did you play the last Prince of Persia game? That's a better example maybe. While it can be said of all PoP games since Sands of Time, the feeling that it's one big quicktime event really bubbled up while playing the new Prince of Persia. I think the "hate" towards QTE's is misplaced in a lot of occasions. It's "cool" to hate it (especially since "cool" people like Yahtzee make such a big deal out of it), but I think there are quite a few examples of situations where QTE's work well enough. I'm pretty sure Heavy Rain will be one of those examples, especially since "failing" a QTE sequence doesn't mean you automatically fail at the game. It just causes a different outcome of the events.

Yes, I played the latest PoP game, and yes, the QTEs were annoying. They annoy my mostly in two situations.

The first is when they are excessive, such as to pry open a grate in Arkham Asylum (just fucking open it). The other is when it's a workaround to what would otherwise be an impressive feat if done by the game player, such as scaling a boss to stab him in the forehead in God of War. Shadow of the Colossus did it perfectly.
