Had a two year lay-off from dead-lifting and had my fourth session today. Managed 180kg for 8 reps with relative ease.

Haven't really lifted for a couple of years, dropped just over 25kg in bodyweight. Gained 10kg back over the last eight weeks just with decent meals and heavy lifting.

Pipe dreams, Don, I'm a bodybuilder, I was kidding myself if I ever thought I'd walk away from it. I'd love to do distance running, I even bought some special shoes, but alas, treading endless miles of pavement just isn't in me.

That is fair comment. I have agreed to do the Bristol 10k with a friend which I am training for now and have found that I can run 2k slowly as you like but I am fucked at the end of it or I can run 2k really quickly but am equally as fucked at the end of it! I think I am a sprinter at heart and will not get the 10k distance sorted out.

That being said, 3 fitness sessions at the gym a week + other random running/bike riding should sort me out by September (when the Bristol 10k is)

I will post some progress reports so I can make myself look like a tit over the next few months :D

I seem to be stuck around the 86.5kg mark at the moment, which is a bit shit. I lost some 9kg of fat in little over 2 months, which has been sustained and I am seeing a real difference in my fitness, but I am sadly lacking in weight loss.

It may have something to do with a heavy month on the beer, in which case I am very happy as I have stayed the same despite a rather unhealthy diet.

June is my 12 stone 6lb target and I am confident that I will make it. Also for that time I have a 7:30 2km row and a 24 minute 5km run in mind - should be fun getting there :D

Are you doing an interval training as part of your workout? This might help you boost your metabolism a bit which in turn can help you burn calories longer and lose weight faster.

Basically you add some periods of high intensity training to your workout. For example if you ride a bike for 20 minutes regularly at a steady pace, do some 30 second intervals where you pedal all-out to get your heart really pumping. A brief warm up then 30 seconds going all out, 30 seconds going at 50-60% then back to going real hard for 30 seconds again. Repeat a bunch of times. There are lots of good resources out there if you google interval training.

Ah yeah I do that with my running - run 800m and then sprint 200m etc
My base level fitness is terrible so I am not running far at the moment, but I have my targets as I said :)

Running 5km in under 24 minutes
Rowing 2km in under 7 minutes 30 seconds
I am not doing distance on bikes as I find that quite easy...I can smash out 10k in a quick time at high resistance

Nice one. Sounds like you've got it covered. The only other advice I have to give is watch what you eat (especially late at night) and try to cut down on alcohol if you drink.

Maybe if you're feeling ambitious change the running thing to 600m between sprints. 200m sprints at intervals sounds pretty hardcore to me.

Hmm, i didn't know about this interval thing, muy interessanto. Will try it out for laffs.

I use other machines for cardio stuffs though, i despise the whole act of running & generally cannot be arsed with it.

Try a tabata workout....

1 round = 20 seconds work followd by 10 seconds of rest, 30 seconds total

8 rounds of each, in order:
Pullups
Pushups
Situps
Squats

No break between movements, 32 consecutive rounds. Total number of reps performed is your score!
pullups - straight arm hang to chin over the bar
pushups - chest to ground, full lockout at the top
situps - shoulder blades touch the ground in the down, shoulders above the hips in the up
squats - crease of hip below the top of the knee in the down, hips fully open at the top.

lets have some scores for simple bodyweight stuff!

Why is it so difficult to get yourself motivated to workout? Any tips for this? Or do you have to just be so fat and disgusted with yourself before taking the initiative?

Do you mean motivated to workout in general, or only before a workout?

Well, both I suppose. You have to be motivated in general first, then you can be motivated for a specific workout...

Burpees are an amazing exercise. I'm not doing them since the knee surgery.

Donnie, one other thing. Try adding whole grains to your diet if you aren't getting them already. The fibre is will help with weight loss and I've been reading that whole grains also help stabilize blood sugar which supposedly can help with weight loss in some way.

Kashi Go Lean is a pretty yummy and healthy cereal.

Others have negative findings on grains... I haven't had any for 3 months and it's great. Don't miss them at all.

If he is prepared to give up grains that's cool but if not, he should switch to whole grains (if he hasn't already) as they're way better than partial grains.

Interesting read. Andy, what do you typically eat for breakfast?

Ok faggots, here's what a real man eats in a day.

Pretty much in this exact order:

Multivitamin
Fish Oil
Protein Shake
Rolled Oats
6 egg whites 1 yolk
2 pieces fruit
Protein bar
Handful almonds
Steak or Chicken breast with vegetables
6 egg whites
Tin of tuna
Tub of cottage cheese
Sashimi
Post workout protein shake
Steak with vegetables
Handful of almonds

1/2 hour cycling 5 days a week (done in 2 x 15 minutes intervals to and from work)
1/2 hour run/walk alternating days, 6 days a week
1 hour weights, 6 days a week
